Silly idea!
Are you for real? Verizon have an iron grip on what goes on their network, if you want your device to be sold on Verizon, you have to pull your pants down, bend over and "enjoy the ride".

As others have said, nothing has ever gone on the Verizon network until it is thoroughly vetted by Verizon. In fact, all of the American networks seem to operate that way as much as possible. As an exception, at least in the case of T-Mobile, they did sell me a SIM to use with my European phone on their US network, when I am there.

That's one of the reasons I've always run third party ROMs. If you root your phone, you can get an AOSP rom (provided you don't have one of the more obscure phones). I hated the stock Tmobile ROM on my MyTouch3g, and hated the stock sprint rom on my Nexus S 4G. Too much bloatware, too few options. For each, I rooted and installed Cyanogenmod, and things are better.

Yes, why buy a operator locked phone if you want to have timely updates?

Ha! The first thing I thought of was, "he's on Verizon, of course he's getting a raw deal on the OS." Verizon locked down OS's since way back when (anyone else here 'free' their Motorola RAZR from their tyranny back then? Howard's forum FTW!).

But the general complaint is valid. Android has serious pros and cons. It is fractured into so many devices that it becomes a weakness or sore spot. At a minimum, we do have an incentive to buy direct Google-ly devices (e.g. Nexus brand) because they will, eventually, see some OS upgrades.

Earlier this morning, I paid some bills on my PC, checked the weather, and browsed the news.

Yesterday, my youngest and I used a PC to find some study guides for Catcher in the Rye and effortlessly search a PDF of the book for references for a paper. We composed, edited, and spell checked the paper using a computer. Later today, I will install SmartMusic on his PC so that he can practice his viola with a program that tracks his tones and pace. Pretty wonderful, no?

Tomorrow, I'll telecommute. I brought home a laptop, but I could have used my PC to securely work from home.

None of this has happened by accident. A lot of people and companies have collaborated to create this wonderfulness. There have been bumps, but people who have contributed nothing to this accomplishment really should sincerely appreciate the magic that they can buy for a couple hundred dollars off an internet retailer on their wonderful computer.
We have progressed mightily indeed. I remember my first civilian job with a international French Company and there in a temporary construction trailer stood a giant Telemecanique T2000, a French 19 bit computer, standing tall and proud like some ancient obelisk pointing the way to the future.
It was passing out of fashion then, though it did last almost to the year 2000 in America according to some of my old buddies.

19 Bits? That's a kinda odd number, in more ways than one. Pun very much intended.

It is interesting to hear all the complaints about Verizon on this forum.

Usually Verizon is the gold standard. It is supposed to have the best network and towers.

My sister and brother-in-law, devout Apple Mac adherents and supplicants still waited, though impatiently, for the iPhone to be available on Verizon before they got theirs.

I have used most all the cellular services including some that aren't here anymore at least by their original names, and Verizon seems the best.

The problem with the Nexus line is that if you want a tablet (which are more relevant to e-reading) it only comes in 7". There is no 10" Nexus tablet.

Verizon is the best but it gets that way by being pretty anal about what goes on there network.

What most people don't get though is that Apple only releases a new phone/OS every year but they keep the details of what goes into that release very quite. They build in time for the networks to test the phones before they announce the release and if they do run into issues they push the release out but don't tell you why.

Google on the other hand are very open about what is going on and they release the code when they are through with it, but before the networks are done. In the case of the Nexus on Verizon there were a few issues that they had that have been fixed so it is ready to go.

Verizon is known as the best for the masses for a reason because there network just works. To make that happen they test the crap out of every thing and there tests cover everything. But this means that for the person that just has the have the Very latest weather it is tested or not are not going to be happy. Personally while I would like to have Jelly Bean ASAP on my Nexus I want it to just work with out hassle and that means waiting for Verizon to finish testing and for Google to fix what they find wrong. This process has taken about 2-3 months which is not to bad.

That's the reason you should buy the phone not from a phone carrier but from the manufacturer itself. Unfortunately most manufacturers don't want to face the wrath of the operators by doing so, and the end result is the customer is screwed. At least with the Nexus phones you can buy directly from Google and you can show the middle finger to the operators.
