I do it the same way and I also use Modify ePub to handle adding in a cover as KF8 doesn't need a cover XML like ePub does. Then I make any edits I want to make it look how I want and finally, I use FlightCrew to check for any structural errors, fix those and done.

I can't see the difference in line spacing.

Maybe if I had the exact same book in the different formats I would.

Load a KF8 book (even if you have to get a sample). Load a Mobi book. Set both for the smallest spacing between the lines. Now tell me if you can see a difference. You should clearly be able to.

You keep harping on about this as though it's a major issue, Jon, and you don't even own a Kindle! Whereas I, who:

1. Do own a Kindle.
2. Read all my books as KF8 these days.

don't regard it as an issue in the slightest. The "medium" line spacing, which is what I have my Kindle set to, looks absolutely fine to my eyes.

Perhaps you should try using a Kindle for a while before doing the "harbinger of doom" act? Just a thought...

Thanks for your two posts, Jon. I've used calibre to convert a couple of ePubs I designed for the MobileRead library to azw3s, and so far I'm a little disappointed with their appearance. To me the line height looks awful, and some of the CSS effects which look good in ePub don't work at all. At least the azw3 files allow text to flow around images, which is something.

I also looked at your The War of the Worlds on my K3, and apart from the line height it looks good.

PS So far as I can tell the azw3 ebooks I converted from my ePubs open at the cover, just as the ePubs do.

PPS I accept without hesitation that I may not be using calibre correctly.

No clue about converting with calibre as I never do that, but the KF8 author/creator can control where the book opens via the OPF file.

Code:
<guide>
   <reference type="text" title="Beginning" href="Text/front-matter.html" />
</guide>
In this example I set the book to open with the file front-matter.html rather than the cover. This is for the first time, subsequent openings will of course be to farthest point read.

Thanks, Jack. My practice is to design the ebook in ePub, and convert to whatever with calibre. Different strokes for different people, I guess.

The line height bug is what's keeping me reading old mobi for now. Mobi at medium line height is 26 lines per page, azw3 at small is 25. That small difference is enough to make text harder to read for me - I start noticing the big white spaces between lines more - so I'll stick with mobi.
