I have a Nexus 7 too and even though calibre can use the new MTP driver to place books on the Nexus via usb you should check out the Calibre Companion App. It allows you to place your Mobi, ePub, PDF, azw files in whatever directory on the device you wish them to go. It is the easiest way to coordinate your ebook use on Android devices.

Thanks. I've been following the discussion about Calibre Companion. I wanted a device it would work on. I've been wanting an Android device for awhile anyway. And a small tablet. This post of yours was one of the factors that decided me on Nexus 7.

I'll probably eventually get a Sony e-ink too.

Re MTP driver, I'm on OS X for which it's not an option, and I can live without it.
