Is what BoB are selling actually the right book though? The blurb is for a different book entirely.

The ISBN number indicates it's The Bromeliad Trilogy: Diggers by Terry Pratchett. The Amazon link on the page links to the $9.99 Bloodlines book. It shows as the correct book in the cart...I'd say it's the correct book, wrong price/description.

More than four. Only five were cheaper at Amazon.

That was listed as a "Daily Deal" from B&N Nook books. It's possible the other sites were price matching for the day.

Apple is already fighting Amazon in the ebook price wars

Quote:
Apple didn’t want to compete with Amazon on ebook prices. But it is already showing that it is more than willing to do so. And if customers are drawn to Apple’s new low prices on ebooks, it’s possible to envision the company’s ebook market share rising.

Why didn't Apple do this in the first place back in early 2010 when the Ipad debuted?

It has money to compete with Amazon. Though the margin would be very low. (Amazon makes $0.01 for every $1 in sales). It would mean that Apple would have a much higher market share and it wouldn't have faced the DOJ lawsuit for price-fixing. It makes money on hardware anyway. It can afford to break-even / low profit on ebook.

This price-fixing will result in tens of millions in lawyers fee and if the DOJ is successful in trial, it would mean fine and damaged reputation as a price-fixer.

It just isn't their preferred model.
They don't want to be in the business of managing content, just of being a storefront for it.

I believe that Steve J was very firm that Apple receive 30% commission on everything sold on iTunes - as witnessed by the steps he took to bring the agency model to fruition. No matter what, he did not want low margins.

When there are discounts or coupons, I'm inclined to stock up on books for future reading; when the price is the same, I have no incentive to buy until I'm actually ready to read the book. I bought a lot of Random House books with Kobo coupons before RH went Agency, not one since the move to Agency.
I'd have to disagree about publisher-set prices being reasonable. I compared the prices I was paying at Fictionwise for sale priced books before the agency pricing, and the current prices for the same books, and if I had to rebuy them now, I'd have to pay several thousand dollars more. I have purchased a lot of ebooks, especially ones I already have in paperback when they are discounted, but when they are priced at new paperback or trade paperback prices, especially when they're backlist books, I just pass them by.

1. According to my understanding, Amazon *always* "made money" (as in "made margin") on the content. I was told by am Amazon executive before agency that 4% of the titles were discounted below cost and they constituted 25% of the sales. The margin made on the other 75% of the sales more than compensated for the "losses". That's what they said and I don't disbelieve them.
Dang... is that really Shatzkin admitting that Amazon's basket pricing doesn't constitute predatory pricing? What's the world coming to?

Where is our favorite Shatzkin-quoting sycophant lately, anyway?
