If people aren't careful they might get one heck of a big bill via the provider AT&T. (The Amazon FAQ on their support page states the provider will be AT&T.)
To put it in perspective: AT&T averages 9.12 mbps download rates on 4G LTE. which converts to 68.4 megabytes per minute. It's not that people will go through their data in the first day; they'll already be well past it in the first five minutes.

4G LTE will not be practical for anyone until they start increasing data allowances.

Indeed. LTE is good, but really, with the speeds we have nowadays on 3.5G, I can't see anybody complaining. There are people who don't even get on cable the speeds we're getting on some 3.5G networks. Furthermore, as more people move over to LTE, there'll be less saturation on the 3G networks.

4G should be used exclusively for LTE, which is the new standard and provides increased speeds over 3G. You can get speeds in excess of 100Mb/s on LTE, again, theoretically.
Neither HSDPA+ nor LTE would have qualified as 4G under the original definition, which required 100 mb/s while moving, and 1gb/s while stationary.

The 4G definition was redefined in 2010 to include both HSDPA+ and LTE (even though LTE is much faster). I don't think it makes much sense to include them both in the definition, but they both meet it.

In the real world, good HSDPA+ speeds are around 10 mb/s and good LTE speeds are around 40 mb/s.

I received an email from amazon today (subject: "The All-New Kindle Family") that said "The 4G device has not been authorized as required by the FCC. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained." down in the fine print near the bottom of the message body.

So shipment will be delayed until FCC approval, whenever that may be.
