I no longer do that on my K4, because the Special Offers are no more and the ads are worthless.

Now it appears that Amazon is going to start up the SOs again with the release of the new Kindles. If they do and the offers are good, I'll turn wifi back on.

They're all worthless to me, in the UK, as ads. I just regard them as interesting and varied screensavers.

I can do without screensavers. I never pay attention to them. My K4 currently has the jumbled letters and a banner box telling me to connect. I have enough books on it for a few more months.

Wow, aren't you afraid that only connecting to Amazon once every few months you might lose all you bookmarks, notes, highlighting, etc. if the K4 crashes. I know crashes are rare, still I would hate to lose all that information. plus in my case i need to Whispersync to read on other devices and sync all the info between them.

Can't answer for monkey but I don't use any of those features so I wouldn't mind losing them lol.

I don't do bookmarks, notes, highlighting, searches, definitions, etc. Nor do I whispersync with my K3 or any other device. I just read.

That's cool, a lot people don't. In my case I seldom read fiction or read for pure entertainment purposes. I mostly read history books, science books, biographies, treatises on emergency management, et cetera, for all of which I feel the need to highlight and book mark. I never use Kindle notes though as they are too slow to create. Without Whispersync I would be really frustrated!

You don't lose that information if you reboot your Kindle.

I didn't say reboot. I'm thinking about a factory reset or a totally dead Kindle. Both happen, though rarely.

I've never had to do a factory reset of any Kindle that I've owned (except when I've sold them) so I can't say that I'll lose any sleep over this .

Whatever....I guess you've never had a computer harddrive fail either causing the loss of data. It might occur rarely, but if it does and you don't have cloud or some kind of backup you're just out of data and luck. I'm sure this means nothing to most users of Kindles or other eReaders, but if someone uses them for research it can be a big deal.

Certainly I have, and I'm rigorous in my backups, but I don't regard anything that's on my Kindle of being of any importance - it can all be reloaded. I don't annotate my books; if I did, I'd certainly feel differently about it.
