I would like to think so, but I'm not sure that just rooting would let you do that. It should, but until XDA get their hands on it I'm loathe to make any predictions of what rooting will and will not allow.

Your challenge to the integrity of my post lacks evidence. All eink kindles are non-SO until you register them (unless you get a pre-registered kindle). They are not two different models. They are the same model with two different purchase options just as I described in my post. I was correct.

To (hopefully) prevent arguing about word definitions, "opt" means "to select an option". The Paper White purchase page gives two purchase options, which allow you to select whether you want to purchase that model with the SO option (i.e. "opt-in") or without the SO option (i.e. "opt-out"). Implying that the "opt-in" and "opt-out" options only apply AFTER a purchase is a false assumption.

I did not say that the Paper White model had a "post-purchase Opt-Out option" such as what you are trying to dispute. I made no "wild assumptions" in my post. It sounds like you made some assumptions while incorrectly interpreting the intent of my post.

Amazon staff have given mixed signals to the press regarding future post-purchase opt-out options. A twit.tv video reported that they were told by amazon that it WILL be available later, despite claims made at the amazon web site. So based on that evidence, you have no proof that I would have been incorrect even if I HAD made such a claim.

Yes, I know that. I don't think ad blocking will be easy though, especially if it's built into the launcher/system UI. Nobody managed to touch it on the first KF, you'd take it apart, resign it, and it just wouldn't load. Even if you changed one pixel of an image file which is common among XDA modders.

Not to mention that I even went as far as taking it completely apart into 700+ files and it was just API after API with tons of layouts and hooks.

Someone will probably figure out, but then it'll block something else (you'll lose the stores access), or we'll end up with weird blank sections/pages.

That was in the context of the PaperWhite. Perhaps I should have worded that as "all eink kindles". I will fix that in my post. Sorry for the confusion. EDIT: fixed.

The KF probably does not SHIP with advertising installed. That gets loaded after you register it, based on your location. I did not say that all kindles were USABLE without registering. So, technically speaking, although not accurate, I was not necessarily incorrect. People often make ASSUMPTIONS that I did not imply, when they challenge my posts. Lack of accuracy (often used for brevity when I use my onscreen keyboard) does not imply falsehood.

The English language can often be all to easily misinterpreted when using bevity, especially when crossing cultural or technical boundaries. Unfortunately, I browse MobileRead more often on my Nexus 7 these days, and the onscreen keyboard encourages brevity. So misunderstandings of my intent may be even more common in the future.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if there were ads on it when it ships. Throw in an ad for something like KFHD accessories that shows on first boot and it's a guaranteed view. Then, once it's registered they can send tailored ads.

I guess we will have to ask somebody who has not yet registered their new KF then, to know for sure. Pure speculation can neither be proved nor disproved without evidence. Until we have evidence, we can only speculate.

Oh I agree, it's all speculation at this point. I simply think that speculating against ads on a device with an ad-supported business model is putting one's money on a three-legged horse.

My presumption is that they will ship with ads until proven otherwise. It could go either way, but until people get units in hand I think it's safer to assume ads will appear whenever possible.

The eink kindles come without ads, until they are registered. But then the KF is based on android, so it may also have a different business model (or not).

Yes you did. Get over it. Semantics is not your strong point or you would see that the term "opt out option" means something totally different from "option to buy with or without SO." You cannot opt out of something before you even buy out, only after you buy it.

Registration happens before shipment. You will see your KF HD serial number on your account page as soon as its shipped and before you receive it.

Plus, its now official:

I purchased the Kindle Paperwhite without the Special Offers and I will now opt out for my Kindle Fire HD.

Some of my eink kindles arrived pre-registered, and some not registered. The ones that were not pre-registered did not have Special Offers until after I registered.

That makes me wonder if SOME Kindle Fires might be shipped unregistered (especially if purchased as a gift).

EDIT: When you order a KF or Kindle HD, you can check the "this is a gift" checkbox, and you get a popup saying:

When you check the "this will be a gift" box, Amazon will:
Deliver the Kindle unregistered. The recipient can register the Kindle to their own Amazon account when it arrives.

So you CAN get a Kindle Fire that is not pre-registered. I suspect that it does not have Special Offers pre-installed in that case, just like the eink kindles.
