Kindle eBooks at libraries isn't supported outside the USA. So if someone outside the USA wants to read library eBooks, a Kindle is not a good fit.

But will borrowing Kindle eBooks work because the OP is outside the USA? You get the eBooks from Amazon.com and possibly georestrictions might be an issue. It would be a shame to get a Kindle because the Philly Library has Kindle eBooks to find they don't work.

Amazon does not directly, or through Overdrive, lease books to public libraries outside the US. Australia's libraries have no power to change this policy.

Thanks everyone for your input. I've studied your replies carefully and have decided to go with an ePub reader and have just bought a Kobo touch. Not sure yet how it works but will get around to it. I would have preferred a Kindle but realize it's too restricted here in Australia so to suit my purposes the ePub reader is the way to go.
