It won't set up. Constantly freezes at checking for books. I've tried on another computer, too and same issue.

I realize this could be an issue with my computer although I don't know how and don't seem to be getting any help figuring out how.

I'd love just to be able to turn it on and drag and drop books onto it. Why do they make it so difficult.

Dealer exchanged it and new machine and updated with no problems to ver 2. I have asked them another query by email and got a response within 48hrs. Well done Kobo!!!!

Seems also most of problems are related to epub books not Kepubs. Perhaps they want us to buy their books to stay in business!

phoenix6911 do you work for another manufacturer? As to be sent a new machine without a return is strange as well as all the problems, unless you have a pc problem.
Keep calm as you seem to have a short fuse.
LOL, do I work for another manufacturer? That's insulting. Do you want me to post the email I got from them which doesn't tell me how to hard reset my kobo and just goes right for the return? Do you want me to post the email I received from them over a week later when I asked when I will be getting this new Kobo? How about the email that tells me I'll be given a tracking number that I never get? Or the email that mentions I have to send them back the old Kobo and be sure to insure with no mention that they will cover the cost?

I don't have a short fuse. I have a very long fuse that's been burning down for many weeks now trying to get this thing to work. So yeah, I guess it will appear short now in comparison. So I'm so glad things worked out for you (although lets face it your Kobo broke, too) but unless you can offer me some insight into something else I can try that I may have missed like some of the other posters have, please don't bother.

Here's your emails (notice the dates):

Hi Phoenix6911,

We apologize for the late reply.

Unfortunately, your Kobo eReader needs to be replaced.

An order will be created to ship you a replacement eReader right away.

Once you receive your replacement, kindly package your eReader and clearly include the letters "RMA" with the help ticket # 120726-000794 on the package.

Do not place any accessories in the package (eReader manuals, receipts, Gela skins, etc.). THESE ITEMS WILL NOT BE RETURNED SHOULD THEY BE INCLUDED.

Insure and ship the package to the following address:

Kobo c/o Ingram Micro Logistics
Branch 40 - CATO
88 Foster Cr - Dock 9
Mississauga, ON, Canada L5R4A1

*** Be advised that in-person deliveries from Kobo customers to Ingram Micro will not be accepted under any circumstances ***

Once you’ve sent the shipment, respond to this email with the name of the shipping company making the delivery, and the tracking number they provided to you.

Thanks,
The Kobo Team

But if it's not setup yet it should not be at the checking for books stage!

Phoenix, the original post I made to you should have solved the "checking for books" issue. I was having the same problem you described with the Kobo Desktop getting stuck on Step 3 of 4--meaning I couldn't finish the setup--and the steps I posted here fixed it.

Try that again.

I know it can be frustrating--believe me--but as somebody that also uses lots of different technology and software I also know they all have their quirks and aggravations. I'm not being condescending, just trying to help.

OK I believe and sorry your Kobo is not working.
I gained this info which may help?

Performing a basic reset
A basic reset will force your Kobo eREader Touch to restart properly. In many cases, this is enough to restore your eReader to normal.
To do a basic reset:
1. If possible, turn your eReader off.
2. Turn it over and locate the small hole on the back.
3. Unfold a paperclip and slide an end into the hole.
4. Press gently until you feel a click.
5. Your eReader should restart.

To perform the factory reset:
1. If possible, back up any books or documents that you added to your eReader using Adobe Digital Editions, or that you manually added using your computer. You do not need to back up any books you bought from the Kobo Store.
2. Press the Home button.
3. Tap the Settings icon an the top left-hand corner of the screen.
4. Tap Settings.
5. Tap Device Information.
6. Tap Factory Reset.
7. Tap Reset Now.

This is how to do a factory reset when you can't do it from within the device:
Hold down the power button for 15 seconds. Hold down the home button and keep it pressed while turning the device on. No USB cable connected.

Also as I did many resets and testing (which may have caused my problem) I found it always best to uninstall the Kobo software and then reinstall again before attaching the KT. (I use W7 on a laptop).
Wish you more success.

Seconded. The setup makes a great difference and will cause it no harm, takes all of five minutes.
