Could be, before Apple Sony was the great innovator, now Samsung products are impressive; I absolutely love my Note. But imo Apple has better build quality.

I've been buying Samsung monitors for more than 15 years. I find that they last about 4 years (some do last longer) before needing replacement. I currently have 6 Samsung monitors, the oldest of which is 7 years and still running well.

Although not computer-related, last year we bought a Samsung refrigerator that was highly rated by Consumer Reports and couldn't be more pleased. It is by far the best refrigerator we have ever owned, and we have owned or used a lot of different brands over the years.

I have a Samsung fridge.

The design is very nice and logical and the price was good. Too soon to tell how it'll hold up over the long term but... "so far, so good".

That said, I wouldn't be so quick to write Apple's epitaph. Let's not forget they're very popular *despite* pricing their gadgets with 300% profit margins. If they choose to live off "merely" a 200% margin they'll do just fine.

Although not a Samsung I just bought a bottom freezer refrigerator. It really is nice. So much more "back friendly."

It's not Samsung, it's Google. . .

Who designs and makes the devices themselves is almost irrelevant. It's Google who discovered how to place a toll booth on the system overall. It will generate enormous revenue that will finance the minor attacks on Apple's current position.

So much cash that they can afford to take the long view and not worry about any minor defeats. As much as I love my Motorola Droid and the environment in which it works, in 5 years, we may all be pulling for Apple!

We had a Samsung fridge that we really liked except it broke down twice in three years after the warranty ran out. It's in the garage now, I may repair it again someday but more likely will just throw it away.

We had better luck with our Samsung television. It broke, but was fixed under warranty and is still in use.

No more Samsung appliances for us.

The article misses the boat. Only Apple can kill off Apple. If they have another amazing innovation in the pipeline that can bouy the brand, then Apple will be fine. If the iPad was their last innovation, people will drift towards innovators and price leaders.

I hear that Apple is working with cable providers on a set top box. If this is truly amazing and linked to the Apple store and leverages existing apple products, then, well, that MIGHT be interesting.

We get our TV over the air (OTA). The image quality is amazing, but the hardware and software to support this are not. If someone were to combine internet TV and OTA in a way that was amazing and inexpensive, they would have special.

Right now, I use a two tuner DTVPal to tune my channels and record OTA. I have an SMP-N200 for netflix and other internet content plus a disk for divitized content (my DVDs). It's pretty good, except that I have to manage a fleet of remote controls and change input when I want to get my entertainment from one source or another. Worse, Netflix does not support playlists, so I have to do something at the end of each movie.

Channelmaster has improved this a little with a DTVPal that has some internet content. Even that is inelegant.

Maybe Apple will put a box on my set that is like TIVO plus Siri? That would be amazing and my iPhone (I don't have one yet) could be a remote control and serve up media to it or let me watch the end of a movie outside the home.

Just sayin...

Or like XBOX + Kinect?
In the living room space Apple is years behind Microsoft and even Sony.
And, to an extent, Samsung, who are already shipping TVs with some Kinect-like features.

It has recently been suggested they buy TiVo and the idea isn't bad. It would at least give them a credible Media Center/DVR product and some installed base to counter (some of) Microsoft's XBOX advantage.

TiVo is dozen+ year old tech. Much as I love our TiVo, I don't think Apple will go that way.

I'm not saying Apple wins this. I'm just saying there is an opportunity. Sony released a DVR in Europe, but nothing in the US. A lot of people are competing for the cable users and somewhat less for the satellite users, but Channelmaster stands along in the OTA market and they are failing miserably.

There are some pieces -- the tuners, the DVR, internet apps, a program guide, DLNA/USB delivery, and an integrated interface. Echostar got a lot of it right with the DTVPal. Channelmaster added some internet apps. If Microsoft or Sony enter the fray, that's OK with me. Personally, I think there is a lot of pressure NOT to support OTA and a ceiling on the profit margin.

My favorite Samsung product is the iPhone. Very high quality ram, storage drive and applications microprocessor Samsung puts in there.

You can use XBOXes as STBs with Comcast and several other cable providers. And they are looking into launching their own cable-over-IP service. All controlled via voice or gesture with kinect (as well as with a remote).

Unfortunately on that model the software really sucks and the screen is much too small to make it useful.

Maybe for cable, but the vacuum is in over the air. The WSJ says 5.1 million get their tv ota and that should push past 6m this year. Most of the players have left the arena, so there is opportunity. At 6m, though, the market will remain a niche, so competition will not be cut throat.

Interesting that several people mention Samsung refrigerators. They got a huge fine from our Government for posting false economy ratings. We have a near new $5000 Samsung fridge with all the options, and the display screen on the front that purportedly shows the current fridge and freezer temperatures is nonsense. When checked they are way off. Samsung admitted that there was no sensor attached to them, they were just a display indicating what the temperature "should" be. They offered a full refund to those who complain, no questions asked.

I find the company to be opportunistic, deliberately misleading, and in some cases outright dishonest - as did our courts on several occasions. We no longer buy Samsung monitors, all have failed in a short time.

When you look at it closely, Apple is also dishonest. They have claimed for years to sell a 64 bit system, way back to the first G5s. They made a big fuss about it at the time. The only real 64 bit systems are the current ones with Mountain Lion. The earlier versions all had 64 bit processors with 32 bit support circuitry. Those produced later booted as 32 bit, but SOME could be forced to boot as 64.

The most successful companies are those who can tell the most convincing lies, not always those who produce the best products.
