Gregor's not new. It has been available electronically for a couple years, and in print since 2003.

The movie is fairly close to the book, I think they did a reasonable job. There are always more details in the book that the movie can portray, but the movie flows nicely and doesn't feel like there are gaps. But you would enjoy the movie better if you've read the book, I'd say.

The movie doesn't do a great job of capturing what made the books good--it only taps the main plot, it abandons the examination of character or the internal struggles of the protagonist.

Um....ya. No. Sorry. I call bullshit on this.
I've read both series. I love Harry Potter. Hunger Games is IMO passable but longevity of the Potter series not bloody likely! The third book in the Hunger Games was borderline torturous to read. I bought the trilogy set from Kobobooks. I liked the first one. The second one was ok and the third I had to read because I read the first two and wanted to see how it ended. It felt like a rehash of the first ones and written because someone told her to, not that it was a part of the story that she just had to get out on paper. It felt forced. Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone came out in 1997. Will anyone remember the Hunger Games books in 15 years? I doubt it. |

So the results are only bestselling at Amazon........I bought the Hunger Games Trilogy and read it even though it wasn't exactly something I was screaming for.
Why you ask? Because my Kindle with Special Offers gave me the whole trilogy for $1. I bet those promotions factored in...plus the fact that Harry Potter had no ebooks forever. |

I loved her Gregor Overlander series, which was similar to Harry Potter in a way (fantasy world hidden in contemporary time). As for Hunger Games, I don't know, never read it (not even a sample), it just doesn't look like my cup of tea from the description alone.
Is there quite a lot of Hunger Games fanfiction? It's crazy how much stuff there is for HP, regardless of the quality of those fics it certainly shows how many people are involved with the HP world. I can see HP being still popular in 10-20 years, if not all time (like Lord of the Rings), can the same be said for Hunger Games? |

What a crap article. Nowhere in the article does it actually say that the sales of Hunger Games have exceeded the sales of Harry Potter. It says they "have captivated a wider range of fans around the globe." What does that mean, exactly? Sounds like the spin from a press release, not a news article. Then they have a quote from someone at Amazon, that the books have "taken the world by storm." Also not exactly NUMBERS.

Loved the first book. Not the next two so much.
Hated the main character. She was interesting, but not someone I would want to spend a lot of time with in the real life. Whiney. Impulsive. But I liked the universe. That is what the best books do to you -- you hate that they end and your relationship with character is over. I liked Peeta better. Last edited by ScotiaBurrell; 08-21-2012 at 11:15 AM. |
