I have the PRS-500 and have, on very rare occasions, had this happen also. In addition, on equally rare occasions, it has dumped me back to the utility page with the "Continue reading" option.

You forget that the 505 does have a shutdown function. It's not auto, but it does work to turn off the power.

Absolutely, Jon, yes, and if you use that function, the Sony behaves very much like the Gen3 does. On both machines one has the choice of either "instant availability" or waiting for it to boot. Personally I prefer the switch off and have a long battery life; others may of course decide otherwise.

Well....we (505) still have (probably ) longer battery life (than any other ebook reader) without having to sucrifice "instant availability" though.

If I understood it correctly, you connect it a lot to your PC. Could it be that it has to do anything with that? Maybe even related to the time/date issue. I hardly ever connect it to my PC and I do have a lot of problems.

Missing Battery Arrived

I received the extra battery on Jan 7: it was mailed Dec 31. That was only about a day after I emailed them about problems with my SD card. They responded within a couple of hours, and mailed out the extra battery (that was not available at the time my order - 73XX was shipped) and a new SD card within a day or two.

My Cybook is working very well. I especially like using RSS feeds, which I update every day to get my daily fix of newspapers and magazine feeds. I did experience the loss of place in books when I first was using the Cybook, but since I've got more used to how it works, and don't make many mistakes with the menu anymore, these problems have gone away. Regarding the "cheap construction", I feel having the reader inside the leather case takes away any feeling of flimsiness and gives it the quality feel of an old leather bound book.

Personally, I feel that Bookeen got it just right. I wanted an electronic replacement for paper books, not a PDA that could read books, access the internet, and do everything else including make your espresso in the morning. I just wanted to read a book and enjoy it the same as the old fashioned way.

I love my Cybook

Glad you got yours, I was curious if they had started shipping the batteries. My order was 71XX and I haven't received it yet, but I'm sure they are shipping the most economical way since they are paying the cost, and it's not a priority item. The memo with the CyBook said it would ship mid Jan and received by the end of the month so they have a couple more weeks.

Dcalder, I've occasionally had the problems you've described, and only when the Cybook reboots itself (annoyingly) when I use the lookup mode. The effect is similar to Windows programs forgetting the changes I've made to my preferences if I crash unexpectedly, but from what you've said, it sounds as if you're shutting things down gently enough.

Aside from the problems with the lookup feature, my experience has been completely smooth: I've got about fifteen documents in .prc and .html format on the card and my dictionaries on the device (which seems to be a bit more stable there), I switch back and forth between three or four documents on average per charge, and in all cases, the page position has been retained. Before closing a document or turning off the reader, I do a "Bookmarks... -> Add Bookmark" as a precaution against other folks losing my position when they play with the device, and though I haven't needed to test it extensively, in my experience this bookmark functionality has been coöperative with perfect consistency.

I appreciate that the 1.0 iteration of the system has a number of rough edges, but given that your experience is so different from mine, I wonder if maybe the firmware on your device has been corrupted somehow.

We have also noted all the remarks of our first customers : folder support, delete key, better sound interface and our dev team is already working on them. Please note that, even if we are not very responsive, we always read all your emails and take in account your feedback.

Since our creation in 2003, Bookeen has always tried to keep in touch with its customers and to offer a reactive and efficient customer support. Concerning this part of our job, we clearly have not met our quality imperatives for the Cybook Gen3 release. We are now making all the necessary decisions to have a customer support department running properly.
Well that doesn't seem far off from an accurate description...good on you Bookeen
