Hi, I've edited the iptables file and verified that the changes stuck but I can't connect to the kindle via either PuTTY or WinSCP, I'm on Win7 Ultimate x64. Its a K5SO, and I've set a static IP. When I try to ping the IP it says "Destination host unreachable.", would anybody be able to help me? I can't see the device when I enter NET VIEW, it shows other devices but not my kindle. The kindle is definitely connected to the network as I did some browsing. I have tried both with and without usbnetwork enabled.
Any help would be appreciated, and thanks, Bill |

Nope, it still isn't happy. I can't even seem to ping it. :/
Any other possible reasons? Is there a way to check on the device itself whether or not the service is even running, or should usbnetwork be enough? Bill |

Many linux services only read their config files when they start. Did you restart your kindle so it can reload iptables?

On second thoughts it appears that I may be able to do it provided I can do it insecurely. I understand the potential risks associated with something like this, but could it be done easily? I think the Home Hub will only allow insecure ssh traffic, and only on port 21. Any ideas?

Home hub allows any old rubbish.
Config > Settings > enter password. Port forwarding Secure Shell Server (IIRC) forwarded to BLAH but IIRC this is for external traffic, I was not aware internal traffic carried a port 22 restriction. EDIT: Yeah, this should only apply if you attempted to go outside the 192.168.x.x range and resolve the kindle via an externally referenced ip (your public ip for example would be a sensible option) and checked external connectivity to the kindle service FIREWALL SETTINGS: DEFAULT: Allow all outgoing connections and block all unsolicited incoming traffic. Port forwarding is allowed. Have you checked the OS you are using is actually letting the request out? or the pings? Is this on windows as a host? Cheers. HTH a bit. EDIT: I just went and checked one. I doubt itś your router Last edited by twobob; 08-08-2012 at 04:41 PM. Reason: added default settings on router |

Port 21 is the command channel for ftp. View your etc/services file (both Linux and Windows have one). In Linux its /etc/services, in Windows its buried deep in the system file tree - same directory where they keep the etc/hosts file. ?drivers/config? that seems familar = you will just have to search for it on Windows unless someone here recalls its full path right off hand. |

I am on a Windows PC, Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and I can ping the router and web addresses, but not the kindle unfortunately. When I try to I get a reply from my own IP address saying that the destination host is unreachable both with and without usbnetworking on. I have verified all of the settings you mention and they are all in place and correct. I tried connecting via my external IP but that doesn't work either, when I used an open port checker it said port 22 was closed. Thanks for the help though, Bill |
