The OP gets it. In the calibre GUI book list simply drag and drop the book you want from the book list to the desktop. No muss no fuss, you get the preferred output book on your desktop without anything else exactly the way the OP wants it.

And in the next release Kovid has added the option from the book details window.

This is precisely the situation I'm trying to avoid.

Some of the guru's round here say that going into Calibres folders is a no no, that irritates me because I was a systems programmer for 40+ years and I think I know what I'm doing, however I fully appreciate why they say that, your 5mm away from creating a problem for yourself.

You still don't get it. You don't need to use the keyboard. You use the menu you get when you right click. You select copy. Then you go to the desktop and paste straight to the desktop. You don't navigate to the Desktop as are on the desktop. Then you right click and select paste. Works very well.

Actually, he doesn't get it. I wasn't specifying to use the keyboard.

But since Kovid has solved the problem, maybe the OP can get it them.

DONT OPEN THE BOOK FOLDER.
put your cursor on the line showing book details: author, title , date etc in the MAIN calibre window and drag from there to desktop.
Foolproof. no right clicks involved, no CTRL keys.
NO risk of an accidental move.
The OP get's davidfor's suggestion perfectly, and he thought he made that perfectly clear with a string of happy people laughing and clapping

But the OP does not think that, is what JSWolf was suggesting when he wrote

I use the mouse the least amount possible, they are a health hazard (RSI), my hands rarely move off the keyboard, if I want to draw I use a graphics tablet & stylus. To do a right click I press the menu key wedged between the right Alt & Ctrl keys. On my Windows Explorer context menu Cut is right above Copy - even if used a mouse I am still 5mm away from losing a file.

davidfor's solution is perfect - using the mouse, is better than losing a file. If I'd known it existed earlier I probably wouldn't have requested the change
