I have to wonder if I'm choosing the right program to view mobi files, because I just put windows 8 on a new hard drive to test. And I still can't view mobi files, epub works. When it first asks me which default program to use. I navigate to the calibre 2 program folder and I choose ebook-viewer. Just wondering if that's the right one? it's the one I've always chosen before.

That is the right program and should work, but calibre's viewer is essentially a ePub viewer, any mobi file will get a quick and dirty (read not full) conversion to ePub prior to viewing. This works great most of the time. If you are having trouble viewing mobi books you might want to try using the Kindle 4 PC app.
