Was I being metaphysical?

Just thinking aloud that I really like today's tech and feel that Jobs and Gates among many others were overall an asset to, rather than oppressors of technology.

Sure they may want to control their particular area of the world, but don't most people of extreme wealth and power? Would I be any different?

Not saying Jobs was perfect, but on the scale of evil oppressors he rates pretty low in my book.

Steve Jobs and his company are being investigated for breaking the anti-trust laws.

Jobs is gone but his influence in this matter at the time it occurred is important legally and historically. Apple should be held to no less a standard than other companies in this kind of matter.

Your book and or rankings of evil oppressors are really immaterial to this matter.

All I know is that I am ready to buy an Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, or Penguin Classics ebook at a reasonable price. The publisher set cost for some of our best modern classics is outrageous. $14.99 for an ebook! Does anyone else think that is insane?

I don't think these two men should be equated. While both have made enemies, only one was a toxic boss famed for treating people like garbage.

I'll buy that.

If you go back to the beginning, I'm going to say that no Woz, definitely no Apple. No Jobs, Apples with sheet metal cases instead of molded plastic.

Of course it wouldn't be better without Apple and/or Jobs, because Apple, or some other company or companies would instead be the kings of luxury-priced desktop, laptop, and hand-held computers.

Yes... there are much more interesting books to buy instead... obviously books about sunglasses are very big at the moment so must be better...

Spoiler:
Sunglasses = shades for those who don't get it...

I'm guessing that you live in the US. When on your next Canadian vacation, I believe you can legally download everything by Hemingway.

The great majority of the Penguin Classics titles are public domain, even in the US. Sometimes the translation used in a Penguin version may be copyrighted, in which case I likely will read the older one.

Kerouac novels are available as eBooks from many US public libraries.

I don't see the problem with the pricing here. People who can't afford these books have free alternatives, and people who can afford them obviously can afford them. Publishers do make money off the backlist -- and that helps support the publication, mostly at a loss, of large numbers of new books.
