I have a version of nook for Windows installed. All I had to do was install the plugins and it picked up the info from the installation of nook.

Also, once the DRM is stripped, there is no need to convert. The ePub from B&N is box standard ePub once the DRM is gone.

The bottom line is that B&N are saying if you want to read our books you have to buy our reader... a very short-sighted policy indeed, they do not have the market share to make that work....

Actually, according to this FAQ from Adobe, B&N DRM is a type of Adobe DRM, and B&N and Adobe's long-term plan is for all ADE devices to read both B&N-flavored Adobe DRM and the traditional Adobe DRM that we're all familiar with.

Adobe is clearly behind schedule, but ADE 1.8 (currently in preview/beta) can read B&N ebooks, but per this post, it looks like no one's been able to successfully sideload B&N ebooks to Sony readers using ADE 1.8. A handful of other devices (e.g., Ectaco jetBook Lite) as well as Bluefire Reader app for iPhone etc. can already read B&N ebooks.

It seems to me that B&N wants all ADE devices to be able to read their books, and it's Sony, not B&N, that's preventing us from reading B&N ebooks on our Sony readers. I can understand why Sony would do that, but it frustrates me.

Don't blame Sony. It was B&N's choice to use a propietary drm same as apple did. If they had been so eager to make their books compatible with all ADE devices all they had to do was use the regular adobe drm that everybody else but B&N and Apple uses.

I actually think when they say they want their books compatible with all ADE devices they only mean phones and tablets not their competitors ebook readers like kobo and sony.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that jetbook supports any adobe drm. Once you remove B&N's drm you can read the books on any epub compatible device.

While it's true they could have used "regular" Adobe ID based DRM, Sony did make the choice to not enable support for Adobe Password based DRM on their newer readers as the RMSDK supports both.

I'm sure B&N did so for various reasons including not wanting to pay Adobe's DRM fees when they already owned eReader DRM, which is why they negotiated a deal with Adobe to use their DRM, but have the decryption setup like it is for eReader DRM'd books.

I think AnemicOak makes a key distinction here: B&N doesn't use their own proprietary DRM -- they use Adobe's new password-based DRM. True, Adobe developed it in conjunction with B&N, but what does that matter if it's available to all booksellers and ereader developers? Adobe password-based DRM is incorporated in the next release of Adobe Digital Editions (1.8) and the most recent Adobe RMSDK 9.2. (RMSDK is the software ereaders use to open Adobe DRM'ed epubs. For more info, see this thread.)

I think it's also worth noting that Nook reads all Adobe DRM, both traditional and password-based. This means if you have a Nook, you can read books from pretty much any source except Amazon. Yes, a Nook will read books from the Sony store and Kobo -- but a Sony reader and Kobo reader will not (at this time) read books from B&N. Doesn't that make B&N more open, not less?

That said, I like what I've seen of Sony Readers, and if Sony ever updates their software to include Adobe's password-based DRM, I'll buy one.

From Ectaco's web site: jetBook Lite: "Now pre-installed with Adobe DRM Support for Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) ePubFiles and Barnes & Noble ePub Books"

Also, the PanDigital Novel supports Adobe's password-based DRM, and can therefore read B&N books.

I've heard anecdotally that Onyx and Bebook have readers that can read B&N ebooks as well, but haven't been able to confirm this.

My 650 displays ePub from B&N just fine. But then again, I don't put DRM infected ePub on my 650.

Good point. If you're willing to strip DRM, you can read books from any source on any device.

So let me re-phrase: If you have a Nook, you can read books from pretty much any source except Amazon simply by purchasing it and downloading/sideloading it to your device. The same cannot be said of Sony or Kobo readers. If you want to read B&N books on a Sony or Kobo reader, you have to strip the DRM first.

That is the problem it's not the epub format it's the DRM that B&N uses if it was just e-pub it would be easy... unless you have a nook just don't bother buying from B&N.. it is just not worth the trouble and you have to (technically) break the DMCA (a potential felony)to make it compatable..... I hope the idiot(s) at B&N change it but given their business history I wouldn't hold out much hope of that.. I expect the online store will go "tits up" just like the mall stores...... did.......

You can either load the nook for PC reader and let the software grab the key from it (although when I first set it up, I wasn't able to get this to work), or you can go the credit card number route (I seem to remember it only uses the last 6 digits of the card number to generate the key, not the whole thing). I don't use the Calibre plugin, just the standalone scripts.

BTW, I like your avatar. I've been a Heretic/Hexen fan since way back...

But do the UK bookstores require a UK credit card on file to use gift certificates?
