Both are idiots. On the one hand, Terry went too far. He could have handled it in a myriad other ways that might have gotten the pirate to reconsider his ways, among other things. Instead, he goes for the easy hit.

On the other hand, the pirate was a complete moron. And a tasteless one, at that.

Terry's actions have been bugging me since I first read it and couldn't figure out why, but then it sunk in - it's that it happened on Facebook. Just about every time I've seen someone do something like this on FB, it comes across as childish and not very well thought-out. I use FB, but I don't take anything there seriously.

But then, much of his self-pub adventure so far seems not very well thought-out but I guess that's more suited for the other thread.

Well, I wouldn't call the pirate that big of an idiot, at least by current Internet standards. That's usually how some pirated material gets propagated, as it's usually the fans who pirate the work (and before the proliferation of ePubs and Mobis, scan the work, OCR it, etc.). Their target downloaders after all are fans of the work.

One of the stranger circumstances I've seen is SF author Nancy Kress conversing with her pirater:

I don't know if this is true, but suppose that Goodkind is far wealthier than the pirate. If so, I'm open to thinking that Goodkind didn't live up to his name here. But, as a general principle, setting a price for what you write, and defending yourself against those who disrespect it, is a highly honorable choice.

This would be even true if only a select few affluent people could read the book, when, of course, a substantial portion of the world's literate population can get his book through a public library.

So life saving drugs and food should be free to all who need them? I agree with you.

By the way, if we can get books via the library, why is there a piracy problem??

Very interesting to read the philosophy espoused ..... and I'm guessing that they'd be young (ish) as well ......

They intrigue me with their intellect and the use to which they've put it!

Wonder how they'll continue to earn their crust if they marry and have children! (Thinking that's a nonsequitur - nope I'm looking down the track at what happens next as part of their maturation, and/or if they form permanent relationships with others not in their group.)

If Goodkind just called out the person, that would be fine (i.e., using myself as an example, Charles A Tan pirated Book X at Site X).

I think the pirate was stupid. You don't steal a car, then tell the neighbors of the guy you stole it from "Hey, I just stole this fancy car, you want some parts?" The Internet is ginormous, why brag in the same area that you just robbed?

It's why I get so frustrated with a lot of the illegal download sites. Not only are they stealing peoples' stuff, they allow Google to search their site. That's the kind of stupid that has your site confiscated and gets you sent to prison (Megauploads).

Btw, I am *not* for the illegal download of books and movies. Probably because I'm not fifteen anymore and I realize people have to eat and that the economy is based on money = goods. But if I was for something like that, I wouldn't advertise it to the rest of the world and think some movie company or author isn't going to add me to their List.
