the instructoins to manually update are to unzip the contents of the downloaded zip file into the .kobo directory. That includes the upgrade folder and the manifest file.

I'm not at all certain that these files are necessary, or that this will make a difference, but this is what the kobo desktop app does when it makes the update itself.

Interesting. The zip file downloaded through the Desktop 3.0 upgrade is different than the one from the direct link.

The times on the internal KoboRoot.tar in the Desktop zip looks like it is from 10 July 2:03 am, and the direct link is from 13 July 3:20 am. I think the times are local and not UTC.

The Desktop version has a revinfo value of 41097, the direct has a value of 41166.

And there are filesize/content differences in the libnickel, libqca, revinfo, libQtGui.4.6.2 and libQtWebKit.2.6.2 files.

And the files in the upgrade directory of the zip for the ntx508 are different.

I haven't installed desktop, but keep getting prompted to. And I can't choose not to; in other words, I can't hit the "close window" thing and have that work to exit desktop. I need to "start download" - and then stop it. Can't get to the library.... and assume I won't be able to do a sync if I were to purchase books.

Ok I know where to find the info on the direct downloaded file but where did you find the files from the desktop download?

You grab it while it is being downloaded by DeskTop. I posted instructions in the main 2.0 thread.

c:\users\<user>\<something>Local\Kobo\<somethingel se> (I'm on my way out the door).

the zip file is visible while it is being downloaded from Kobo, and while it is being downloaded to the Touch. Copy the file a couple of times to ensure you have the final and full file.
