I used to do that on long trips too. But anymore, I limit my vacations to western Washington and Oregon; and no more than about 4 to 5 hours one way by car. For this, radio and Cds are sufficient.

Apple has always been more conservative; while Android has had large screens, LTE, multi-tasking and so forth for years, some of these features are still missing in iOS or just recently added. Apple has (had?) the sex appeal, but technology wise, they're not at the forefront. They're hurt on 2 fronts, first they don't want to bring new cutting edge tech to the phone (the cynic in me says they're holding back to offer it to you at the next cycle, to give you a reason to update, apple say they wait for it to mature), second they have a 1 year to 18 months cycle, whereas on Android the plethora of manufacturers means new tech advances make it to the consumer that much faster.

The majority of my mobile listening is also audiobooks. I have a Motorola Droid Bionic (Android) and when in my vehicle(2011 F150 with Sync), I sync it to my truck through bluetooth and use Ambling Book player to listen to books. I can start, stop and skip backward and forward using steering wheel controls. When I listen to music, I start Pandora and can control the same things in Pandora. They make car docks for the Motorola phones (but you don't really need one unless you are using your phone to navigate) and you can navigate and it will pause you book/music to give spoken directions and then continue to play your book/music. When I want to listen when not in my truck, I have a bluetooth headset.

Is your car's interface regular phone jack via aux? If that's the case, any modern Android phone, like Galaxy SII, would let you play songs and use it via aux port. But you are right, does not control tracks, only volume, at least on my wife's car. She drives a 2011 Miata, which has a Bose system. |

yes but with iPhone 5 etc the standard changes so you'll all need a new docking connector. probably ipad mini and everthing else that comes out from now onwards.

The never-ending feeling must explain the look of "Good god, why am I STILL driving?" on your face.

Be careful who you pick up. Had you picked me up before he did, you'd have been the one walking.

Sure - getting the "sound" is no problem; pretty much every car on the market these days has an auxiliary input jack. It's the control functions that make the iPod interface useful - you don't really want to be fiddling around with the phone while driving!

This link seems pretty legit about the smaller iphone connector.

Thanks - I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully, even if they do change it, there will be some sort of adapter available to allow existing accessories to continue to work - it's such a huge market.

Android have been ahead of apple for quite some time now, not just with these latest phones. The Samsung galaxy s2 was better than the iPhone 4s.
