Maybe I complain too much?

This may be a total red herring, but the small-ish size of the dropcap in the calibre conversion may be something as simple as the largest value being too small in the box Convert - Look&Feel - Font size key.

The enormous 'A' would be reduced to the max font-size in that box if you have 'Font size scaling' enabled.

[Edit:] I checked out my theory with the posted sample epub. I believe it is correct. In addition I believe the positioning, i.e. 'drop' of the dropcap in the converted azw3 will vary depending on the preference setting you have in the Look&Feel - Minimum line height box.

Re: the lines around 'Harry', they are both created by using the same embedded image. The reason they look bad in the conversion (IMO) is that the original epub is badly coded. I don't mean errors, I mean poor choice of markup method. It can be easily fixed in the source epub (or converted azw3), but whether you could be bothered to do so would be an individual choice.
