In the end, I went with it to be repaired for a fee, yet in my case the cost would be almost equall to the price of a new unit. They said it had a faulty logic board. I ended up buying another.

That doesn't make any sense. If something was faulty on the reader why would you have to pay for it? How did they explain that?
