That certainly shouldn't happen with e-Pubs. Even long books only take a few seconds (maybe up to five? I don't really stop the time) to load on my T1 and I can't imagine the Kobo being much slower, if it is at all. Though I guess it could take longer for picture heavy books.

The book I have timed is in fact only 135 pages and has no pictures. I'm wondering if I ought to convert it with Calibre to an epub again, even though it is an epub already, in case there is a problem with the file.
Is a problem with the file possible or likely? |

My experiences:
PRS 505 - loads fine average (5-15 seconds for epub), my wife's Kobo Wireless is much newer and also much slower. Hers loads an epub in 10-20 seconds, for similar-sized ebook. The biggest epubs I have (around 1mb) will load in a slightly longer time, only to be expected. For further comparison - I have around 400 books, she has around 30 (she is an avid re-reader rather than devouring the latest novels). PDF files are marginally slower. HTH. |

And this is with about 300 books on the card. I can't imagine a book taking minutes. I suspect there's something very wrong, either with the device or your files, if your KT is doing this. Last edited by meeera; 07-01-2012 at 10:38 PM. |

More than a few seconds doesn't sound right. I'd try re-downloading.

I've never known a book to be slow at opening on the Kindle. I just tap the name in the library and it opens instantly.
On the older PRS-505 and PRS-300 there can be a delay in initially opening a book if it's in LRF format, because the device paginates the book on initial opening, which can take a little while. But that shouldn't happen with an ePub book. |

The more things I had on my Sony PRS-600, the slower everything went. Try deleting any notes and pictures. Perhaps consider narrowing down the selection of books you keep on your '300 to a dozen.
I recall one day finding a bunch of cover images from books I'd deleted being left on the device. Removing all of them made my '600 much more responsive. |

On my kobo touch loading an epub book is very fast (about 1 second even for large books). But closing books can take some time (up to 20 seconds). How long depends on how many books are stored on the device.
Everything runs smoothly with up to 100 books stored on the device. Between 100 and 600 books closing a book and loading the library starts to slow down to a level that is still somewhat acceptable provided you do not switch books constantly. Over about 600 books (which is about half the capacity of the internal memory) library loading time slows down to inacceptable levels and other bugs appear (such as loosing shortlist entries). |

On occasion I have had books that were slow to load (on my 505, have not noticed one on my T1) or some way through the book the next page would take an age.
Mostly a conversion in calibre solved the problem which I believe was related to having a few large/complex html files within the epub rather than individual small ones. |

It is strange for ebook software to take that long. All a reader is doing is basically opening text-only html files extracted from an archive. It should be as fast as a web browser reading files off a local drive.
The Nook ST has a good processor at least. When jailbroken it runs Android 2.1 fine, the only problem being that the screen refresh speed is super limited due to e-ink. You might want to back up your data and reset the OS back to the factory settings, I dunno. |

I'm sure the processors on any ereader device are quite capable of running fast but that would just use up power which in turn would reduce battery life. There's also no point having a page prepared in a few micro seconds if it then takes half a second for the e-paper to display it. I'm reasonably happy with the speed of even my old Kindle (v2) for opening books and reading but I do find it slow when it comes to web access.
