I know how to, but I usually don't since I shorten the check out time.

You might want to rethink this one. Some libraries will suspend your account if you return books within 24-hours of the original download.

What?! If I'm not interrupted I can usually finish a book in a few hours. Seems silly to penalize me for trying to be responsible and returning it once I'm done.

Now I want to write a sternly-worded letter to these library systems...

They probably think you are just removing the DRM from the book, I had my Account suspended but only for a day or two. I don't use the Library much anymore because they don't seem to get any good new books.

I am somewhere between always and rarely, depending how busy real life is. I always borrow for 21 days, and usually books are returned early. Occasionally I'll get the notice that a title will expire in a couple of days and I've yet to start it. I blame that on free books.

My library has the first few sample chapters attached to many books, so that I can shorten the time I have the whole book out by having read the first few chapters in advance. I have lots of samples that I got just from the library alone.

I had my account suspended for a week because they decided I returned books too early. Clearly they don't understand a few facts about many people who read a lot.

I used to return books within 1-2 days either because I didn't like the book or it was a really quick read (usually children or young adult books). I now don't return any book until at least 4 days after checkout. This only hurts other patrons who are waiting for the book.

I'm going to have to see if my library has that, not just out of courtesy for other users but because of the warning about returning ebooks too early. I haven't run into that problem, even though I've signed out 5 books at a time and returned the 3 or 4 that I didn't think that I'd like the next day -- but given that library and OverDrive policies can change it ain't worth the risk.

I was able to do that with a few of the Stephen King books I was interested in trying. With the sample chapters it doesn't count as a library loan so you can keep it and tag it for yourself whether or not you think you want to read the whole book eventually.

Many of the samples I have I haven't read yet, but at least i will know if I want to queue it up by the time I get to it.

I return them early more often than not. I usually return them right after transferring them to my (or hubby's) reader. That is generally a day or two after downloading to ADE. Our readers aren't wifi, so we just don't hook them back up until we're finished reading. Haven't had a problem with either of our library systems - maybe that day or two is enough to not raise flags...

Not to be a wize guy but just a point of observation, in a thread entitled "Do you know how to return ebooks to the libary?" nine have said no yet there is, unless I missed it, no instructions that tell you how.

Don't let me steal the thread, but are the instructions common to libraries or are the all different? My wife has some she would like to return but has been unable to find out how :-)

It depends upon the software or ereader that you you. I would suggest searching these forums using something like "software or ereader name return library book" to see what pops up. Of course, replace the italicized part with the software or ereader that you're using (e.g. Adobe Digital Editions, OverDrive, Sony).

To my knowledge, you don't actually return the book through the library's website.

If the ebook is an epub or pdf version, go to Adobe Digital Editions, float your mouse pointer over the ebook you want to return and an arrow will appear just above the cover at the top left, click on the arrow and click on Return Borrowed Item.

If the ebooks is a Kindle version, go to Manage Your Kindle on Amazon's website. Find the ebook you want to return in Your Kindle Library. To the right of the title and author there is an Actions button. Float your mouse pointer over this button and the last option should be Return this book.

Thanks for the suggestions, didn't find anything. She emailed "library2go" should hear soon, they were audio books so may well be different.

thanks
