Don't download with the Kobo software. That will get you a different format (kepub) which only works with Kobo's software and apps and Kobo devices.
On the Kobo website click on 'My Library' and find a book you want to download. See if there is a button which says "ADOBE DRM EPUB". Click that button and your browser should try to download a file with the .acsm extension. Either tell your browser you want to open that file or download the file to your computer and then double click it. This will launch Adobe Digital Editions (which must be registered to the same user ID as the Sony is) and ADE will download the actual ePub file to your computer. Once the book is downloaded you can copy it to the Sony by connecting it via USB and doing a drag and drop from the Library screen in ADE to the icon for the Sony (which should appear below where the Bookshelves are listed in ADE). |

I use the Sony Reader software instead of ADE to download books from Kobo. Since I *do* purchase most of my books from Sony, I find it easier to use just one application to download my epubs.
I don't even have ADE installed on my computer. |

Yes, you should be able to redownload what had been purchased. That's standard from most ebook stores online. As for how to do it, make sure you get the epub and not the kepub as stated above. I have bought a few things from kobo and I never used their software to download stuff, just click on the Adobe link to download.

Kobo does a good job explaining ADE here: http://www.kobobooks.com/ade. There is even an item that addresses the Sony reader.
