Podcasts App does audio & video, and they download directly to the device. Podcasts, Downcast and Instacast all have the facility to search for and subscribe to new podcasts - no iTunes required.

I can't see a download button on mine, nor any option to not download. The only time I listened to a podcast with it, there was no streaming problem even when I was underground, where 3G reception is gone and sometimes even phone reception. So my podcasts are on my iPhone, not in the cloud.

Make sure you don't have auto-download enabled on your subscription. Otherwise tapping the title of the podcast episode should stream, while the down-facing arrow on the right downloads. The arrow naturally disappears on those that have been downloaded.

Thanks, but I don't want to disable it, the way it works is perfect for me. I was just curious.

ETA : but thanks for making me look for the settings screen, I thought everything was already set up because it showed me the episodes I had already downloaded through iTunes, but in fact I wasn't subscribed to the podcasts!

Thanks - I also had auto-download enabled which is why I hadn't realised it would stream, and tbh streaming isn't something I ever do as I'm almost always out of WiFi when I'm listening to podcasts.

Well, I didn't care much for the podcasts. If it makes the standard iTunes app faster and less resource hungry, this is a welcome change for me.
