HTML5 and ePub3 vs XHMTL and ePub2 really has very little bearing on your "widely and easily" distributed premise. If anything, ePub3/HTML5 might actually restrict you a little more in that department as opposed to other options (based on technologies currently available). And it's not like the older standards are going to be unsupported any time in the foreseeable future.
