My library's selection of new paper books has, due to cutbacks, gotten so poor that, by comparison, the Overdrive selection seems better. (Although the local Overdrive selection is for the whole county, and perhaps the paper selection for the county as a while is better. Plus I have Overdrive access from multiple counties. So Overdrive certainly seems better.)

Two of the six libraries in our township are current closed for major renovation projects in which they are physically expanding. I know it is easier to raise money for bricks than books, but, well, I still don't like the priorities.

Like so many surveys, the devil's in the details. The article doesn't mention the timing of the survey. Up until a year ago the most popular e-reader, Kindle, and the most popular book store, Amazon, weren't linked to libraries, so the vast majority of users had no simple path to get digital books. Kindle library lending has only been open for 13 months and most libraries took a while to get on board.

Prior to Overdrive, getting e-books from our local library was a real chore, even for those few techies who read. Download the book, convert it to the right format, plug in e-reader, upload book. The first time I tried Overdrive, I was amazed at the simplicity. It's just as simple to borrow a library e-book as it is to buy it off Amazon.

I older librarians. The ones I've met are far more knowledgeable about technology than the younger ones. At least that seems to be the case when it comes down to their depth of knowledge about electronic resources. (I'm sure the younger ones follow all of the latest trends, but I seek out librarians to find information rather than follow the latest digital fad.)

Am I the only one who finds the whole idea of a library "lending" ebooks (and with an artificial limit on how many copies can be lent at any one time..) utterly ludicrous?

Fortunately for me, most acquisitions librarians over here don't think that way.

Don't blame the library, the limit on copies is set by the publishers I believe.

As someone in the UK I am glad that I can download eBooks from my Public Library, and as yet don't have to wait too long to do so.

I also still like visiting the library, and in some ways it is easier to thumb through the books and pick one or two out.

I don't think there have been any "cutbacks" in our libraries here yet. However if eBooks take off, the danger is that this will be used as an excuse to do just that, which will be a shame as there are, and probably always will be many people who prefer to read a paper book.

When I was first looking for a reader back in '09 borrowing from the library was one of the features that made me decide on getting a Sony. That and no keyboard (major deciding factor).

And yea some books have long waiting lists my usual wait is about 20 give or take a few. It beats waiting for a book to go under $10.

I've been using my mom's library card in Ann Arbor to check out ebooks for the last year because my city (Detroit) didn't offer library ebooks. I just checked again to see if that had changed and it looks like they offer ebooks now, but the website is so difficult to use I'm surprised anyone is able to check the ebooks out. You can't browse the ebooks available or even search the ebook database, you can only search for a specific book or author and then wade through the hard copies, audiobooks, reference books, etc. to see if they have any ebooks available. So far I haven't been able to find a single ebook that they offer, so I'm not sure how smooth the check-out process is.

Maybe I'll just stick to the Ann Arbor library.

Believe it or not, some librarians see ebooks as a threat--like, people won't need a central destination to go get materials. In other news, people hate losing their jobs...

Online only serves my needs.

Faced with a requirement to cut $4.66 million from its budget, the Jacksonville Public Library board has proposed cutting jobs, closing all library branches on Sundays and most at least one other day a week.

This reduction of 264 service hours, or about 24 percent, will come along with the elimination of 71 full-time positions. That includes 41 vacancies and 30 filled jobs, including librarians and library technicians, from a total staff of 352, a 20 percent cut.

I have thought about that wondering how the libraries will survive, but the last time I went to the library I was a teen.

I'll move that one step further and suggest as many as twenty percent of US readers are rural or small town people who don't even have a local library. Readers are more likely to seek a remote residence than people who engage in pastimes requirinv a population base larger than a few people.

The vast majority of the population lives in towns large enough to have a library. I'm originally from a small town, and in my experience, people in cities are much more likely to be readers than those in small towns. Readers tend to want to live where they have ready access to book stores and libraries. Having to drive an hour to get to a bookstore isn't conducive to reading.

And some fans of e-books see libraries as the enemy. I remember on one Kindle board, several posters were gleeful when Borders closed.
