another competitor to lulu is blurb.com. It specializes in photography books but you can make any kind of book. You can make a hardcover with an image on the cover or a dust jacket.

Is the cover what we call here a library cover, with the picture printed on the cover, or do they have dust jackets?
Either. And even both. It depends what the publisher specifies. If you want to see one with a 'library' cover, you could always buy my book Kai Lung Raises His Voice. $25.99 - POD hardcovers aren't inexpensive!

As I think I have mentioned elsewhere, I am writing my first novel. I can imagine giving hardcopies to my family as gifts, and making that option available to the public even if nobody wants to pay the price!

I don't know about linear feet, but I used to have three very full 5-6 shelf bookshelves. Since I've been liquidating paperbacks for ebooks I could probably get that down to two bookshelves.

I don't buy a lot of books - only my favorite authors / favorite books. Even before ebooks really started catching on, I was migrating my favorite paperbacks to hardcovers and getting rid of a lot of paperbacks. Now I work on migrating lesser-liked paper books (or books with no hardcovers) to ebooks, and my favorites, to getting in hardcover.

Space isn't really an issue for me - I don't live in a big city. Besides, I don't collect video games or CDs, or DVDs much any more - sold a lot over the years, tight budget - so I'm using less storage space over time, really.

I don't think it will make any difference to my comment, but I was looking for a number that would come from the total you got by taking a tape measure or yard stick and measuring the width of each individual shelf on each book case and totaling it.
For example that might be 3 (bookcases) times 5 shelves (on each bookcase) times 3 1/2 feet (width of each shelf) = 52.5 linear feet of book space.

I agree that is not that great an amount of space.
