Here are pictures of silicone sleeve for Kobo Touch and .8 mm thick steel screen protector I made. I could cut screen protector just under full length and width because home button is recessed.
Used 22 ga. steel Galvalume roofing metal I had as scrap. Shear to size rounding corners. Shearing steel forms sharp edges that I ground off by dragging edge against concrete driveway. Tape edges of cover with plastic electrical tape.

I was looking for a way to protect my readers while traveling and found a Pelican case for e-readers.

It fits my Sony T-1 (in its case) or my Kindle Fire (without its case). It also fits other 7" tablets.

Got it at Amazon for about $25.

My T1 fell off the coffee table, a distance of maybe two feet, onto a wood floor and the screen fractured. I'm guessing it hit on the top left corner because that's where the fracture is. I had only owned it about two months.

I took it to the Sony store for repair or exchange and they said that it wasn't a manufacturer's defect so it wasn't covered by the warranty. Furthermore, if I wanted it repaired I should call the 800 number, that the store didn't deal with such issues. And they weren't nice about it either. I spoke to the manager, explaining that I felt that if the screen cracked so easily that it was a manufacturing defect and should be covered. She didn't buy it. I asked her what she would have me do. She said they're only $99, just buy another one.

I have owned a PRS-300 for about three years and have found it to be an extremely reliable sturdy device. I was expecting the same from the T1 and was bitterly disappointed. I wanted to "upgrade" to the T1 for what now seem minor annoyances. I am still so incensed by the contempt of the Sony store manager and the lack of build quality of the T1 that I seriously may never buy another Sony product. I have been a loyal owner/purchaser of many types of Sony products for nearly my entire life, but no more.

I now intend to see if new firmware can fix the frustrating slow book loading on my PRS-300. I don't know what reader I will buy when the PRS-300 eventually dies, but it won't be a Sony.

Any reader could die after the above accident, and it has nothing to do with "build quality" , that's just how nearly all readers are made.
Many owners have done the same or worse, and they've survived, the same as can happen if you drop an antique Ming vase ! Luck of the draw I'm afraid.
I presume you did check your household contents insurance for Accidental Damage cover ?
Should be covered........
And ithiswouldn't be covered by any warranty, only by some form of accidental damage insurance.

Well, I've dropped my PRS-300 several times (accidentally, of course) and nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Idiot me expected the same performance from the new version. I was suspicious when I saw the light plastic frame, however the lighter weight is one of the reasons I wanted it.

Was it in a protective cover when it hit the floor?

To be honest it would not matter if it was a Sony, Kindle, Nook or any other ereader on the market. An impact like that without a protective case would still have caused the same result. If it had a protective case, then the T1 may have had a chance of surviving the fall.

If you did have the T1 wrapped up in a protective case, then ouch!

Well then, you've been lucky and now your luck ran out. Stop dropping electronics and take better care of your property so you won't have these issues and if you do incur damage after a drop, then accept responsibility because you're the one that dropped it!

Complaing to the manager that it broke because of poor build quality is like complaining about a car after you've been in an accident - the car should have held up much better than it did, you should fix it for free. Not gonna happen!

Pelican cases

Those cases are very nice!
Like tupperware on steroids!
Doesn't seem too bulky for serious drop/impact protection!!
