I've found it very enjoyable. If I recall, I learned about it on Mobileread.com

The Progenitor trilogy by Dan Worth. A tad slow at the start but rapidly becomes insanely epic.

''As the human Commonwealth slides towards war with the alien fanatics of the K'Soth Empire, two archaeologists follow a trail of clues to a barren backward planet between the two belligerent powers that point to ancient, forgotten conflicts and mysterious alien technology. As darkness descends; ancient and terrible secrets are about to be uncovered.''

Since this thread is re-re opened I may as well add my comment .

I haven't read Star Force so I'm not sure how close they are, but I just finished reading all of Mike Shepherd's Kris Longknife series, first book Mutineer, and with a new book coming out this October I thought he could use a plug. I'd label the series closer to Space Opera vs Campell's Lost Fleet. Caution: Kris has some bad spelling errors ('juggle elbows') and repeated phrases (like 'juggle elbows') that might overly annoy some readers. IMO these have good tech.

Also recently finished Theres not to Reason Why series by Jean Johnson, starting with book A Soldier's Duty. The first book is Marine boot camp heavy, the second is Navy OCS heavy. The main character is a pre-cog so rather hard handed on Mary Sue-ism, but it kinda fits since she is psychic. IIRC these tend to save the combat bits for the second half of the novel. A lot more military than technological.

this is a old thread but i couldnt help myself lol. I read star force and loved it especially marvin.
And alot of the reccomended books are nothing like star force and man oh man is there some crazy series that are like star force but better. I have literally read thousands of sci-fi space opera books and i like only a certain kind.
Aliens and mystery and super advanced tech and really crazy theorys of the universe.
I have even run out of books too read in this genre. Im scraping the pot now

But here are the top of the top , cream of the crop space opera.

Raymond weil "best author" Slaver wars series & galactic empire series
Vaughn heppner lost starship series & extinction wars
Ryk brown Frontiers saga series
Stephen w bennet koban series
Richard fox ember wars saga
TR harris human chronicles
John scalzi old mans war

There is alot more but those are the some of the best
