Run calibre in debug mode and if it prints out anything useful before crashing. But I really can't think of anything that could cause a hard crash.

Hi Kovid,

Just ran Calibre under debug at work on Windows XP SP3 PC. Tried author search and it crashed immediately producing the following debug message. I know nothing abiut the debug but the message to me does not say a lot?

**************************************

calibre Debug log
calibre 0.8.56
Windows-XP-5.1.2600-SP3
Windows
('Windows', 'XP', '5.1.2600')
Python 2.7.3
Windows: ('XP', '5.1.2600', 'SP3', 'Uniprocessor Free')
Starting up...
Started up in 73.53 seconds with 9141 books

******************************************

Are there any other files that it might have created?

Cheers

There isn't anything useful in that debug. Other thing to try, exclude the calibre library directory and calibre.exe from your antivirus program (or turn it off temporarily).

Curious, how much RAM do you have? Is the pagefile disabled? I've had Calibre crash on me due to out of memory issues.

I already had this done on both PCs with no difference.

I just removed 0.8.56 from my Work PC and re-installed 0.8.55. Searching by either author or Title has been no problem after trying it many times. Perhaps 0.8.56 doesn't understand Australian!!

It is a weird problem and one I have never struck before with many, many versions of Calibre.

Well 0.8.56 upgraded the bundled Qt to 4.8.2, perhaps something on your system doesn't play nice with it. For the moment I'd suggest sticking with 0.8.55

Thanks Kovid,

I'll do that and perhaps try the next version after 0.8.56!

Regards

For the next release, I will disable an optimization in Qt that I had enabled for 0.8.56. Hopefully that will fix your crashes.

Tried 0.8.58 but comes up with error and then closes.

"Runtime Error!

That indicates a corrupted installation, or a registry issues. Try following the steps here: http://www.ehow.com/how_5009906_fix-...e-error-r.html

Tried that. Reloaded 0.8.58 and again Calibre collapsed. Did not have any error message - just closed.
Tried searching straight from the Search bar and no problem. However, if I try to search by Advanced - Title/Author/Series it crashed everytime. Although no others seem to have this problem I have struck it on a Windows XP PC and my home Windows 7 Home Premium with heaps of memory and disk and both fail.

Is there any that there could be something in my Calibre library or any area that is particular only to my data that could be causing this?

It is getting very frustrating and I can only work well with Version 0.8.55

it hates australians. I have had my entire computer lock up when trying to upload books after the update. BUT after being forced into 3 hard boots it seems to have settled down.
Very odd, again australian

Oh the only thing I can think is xp updated at the same time. might be nothing
