Yeah, but there was a "mini-boom" in science fiction magazines in 1977. Cosmos got started -- it was a great magazine, but doomed by its financing plan -- it only lasted 4 issues. Galileo came out -- it was pretty good, but low-budget, and only ran for a little more than 2 years. And Unearth -- a digest-sized magazine, but it struggled to get shelf space -- it ran for about 2 years.

Still, it was a good time to be a reader.

And a movie goer as well. Star Wars and Star Trek gave a good boost to Science Fiction about that time along with Battlestar Galactica and other programming and it was round that time that I really discovered Science Fiction. I was 6.5 in the summer of 1977.

Go to Smashwords, narrow the selection to Science Fiction on the left panel, then sort by "Highest Rated" at the top. The Star Creature is currently number 23 (third from the top on the second page) with nine 5-Star reviews.

A short read for waiting around in the airport, etc. And, it's free.

For Throwback Thursday, an update on my first published story, The Star Creature. It just got its tenth "starred" review. All ten are 5-Stars. There are (currently) 21,762 science fiction stories at Smashwords. If you rank them by "Highest Rated" The Star Creature is 14th from the top.

If you haven't read it yet, it might be worth a look!

Now at 12 reviews, but one of them is for only 4 stars.

Still free.

Thanks for sharing this story with us, I saw your last bump and decided to try it out and was very pleased I did. I posted in the "What are you reading thread" about it but forgot to do that here. I encourage anyone who sees this to give it a try not just people who enjoy science fiction. It only takes a few minutes to read and is very good.

Thumbs up

Add me to the list of those thanking you for the story. It reminds me in many ways of one I read back in the glory days of Astounding (long before it became Analog) by, if memory serves me, Henry Kuttner.

Had you been a generation or so earlier, you might have found a spot in the pantheon of SF greats along with Weinbaum, Asimov, and Heinlein. I think it's that good. Now I have to start looking at some of your other works!

Thanks again!
