I don't really understand this. Do you not need to run ADE at some point if you're using Calibre?

Either ADE or the Sony software, something to enable DRM'd downloads.

Thanks. That's what I thought. So, it's not really fully Linux compatible yet.

Edit: I'm not very confident in the "yet" part.

But ADE can easily be made to run in a Linux distribution, by using Wine. Sony's software on the other hand, absolutely refused to work right. Since Sony's software was necessary to download their books, that meant Sony eReaders worked in Linux only if you bought the books from someone else. Now that we can buy from their website, that's no longer the case.

Newbie question

I will be getting my T1 this week. I was excited to read about the Sony store and was hoping to use it like the Kobo store [without the computer app]. But it won't let me create an account without downloading the Sony app! From their website:

Quote:
To create an account on a computer:
1. Click here to download and install the latest software.
2. Once the software launches, choose “Create New Account” and follow the prompts to register your account and select choose your payment method.

To create an account on your Sony® Reader™ Wi-Fi®:
1. Click here to download and install the latest software.
2. Once the software launches, choose “Create New Account” and follow the prompts to register your account and select choose your payment method.
3. Shop at the Reader™ Store.
Don't most of the readers here dislike the app? Is there a way around this? Which way is the preferred method? and easiest?

I already have ADE and I use Calibre to manage all my purchases from the Kobo store and was hoping to do the same with the Sony store and my T1. I just would like the option to purchase something on the reader itself if I want, or if they're having a special etc. even though I generally use Amazon or Kobo, I would like the option to use the Sony store too.

Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated!

You can register at Sony's eBookstore without the need for the Sony software. But if you want to authorize your T1, first create an account with Adobe. Then use that to log into the Sony eBookstore via the T1 and it should be registered.

I'd read a while ago (6 months?) on these boards that Adobe's more recent versions wouldn't work under Wine. Are you using a recent version of ADE, or an older one?

It was an older version as of 6 months ago. The hard drive running that distro has since died and I have been stuck in Windows-land since then.

I'll be getting a new computer this weekend and plan to put Linux on it, so if you're interested I can report back once I have the latest ADE installed and up and running.

Yes, please. I'm running Linux myself, and would like to know if recent versions of Wine have caught up with recent versions of ADE. I don't intend on buying many books with DRM, but there is the odd publication that tests my resolve not to reward those who apply it.
