Okay, so here's an update.

I've disabled the Reader software from opening automatically, and now use Calibre. Far better. I'll still use Reader for updates though.

So, now that I'm using Calibre, I downloaded some free ePub books to test it out. MetaData etc worked, and I sent them across. I noticed on the desktop where two mounted disks, one called SETTINGS, the other called READER.

I pressed eject on Calibre, and it 'ejected', and the READER disk thing disappeared from the desktop. However, the SETTINGS disk was still there. Anyone know what it is/for? Either way, once I've ejected everything the T1 still says it's connected, and am a bit concerned as to whether I'm removing it 'unsafely'.

Opening reader I get this, which I'm presuming is just the contents of the eReader, though it didn't appear until I started using Calibre.

Then settings has this;

... and I still can't get the Reader Store on my device to stay connected. Am I doing something wrong?

... okay thanks Cdesja5, I'll try it out once everything else is set up.

SETTINGS just contains the setup software for the Sony Reader app. It's annoying and I wish they wouldn't include it, because it's probably very out of date and you can just download it anyway.

Be sure to eject it via the Finder before disconnecting the reader, otherwise Mac OS X will complain (and there's a small chance of disk corruption of some sort; I remember occasionally when I locked up my Mac while it was still attached to the Kindle and rebooted, I ended up with a corrupted filesystem on my boot partition and had to wipe and reinstall everything).

May have something to do with whether or not your device is properly registered to the ADE account associated with your Sony account. IIRC, it would keep making me re-enter account/password until the ADE activation went through.

Congratulations on getting the reader you wanted and hope you enjoy it a lot.

So, I just have to keep on ejecting that each time then?

Yeah, I eject it from the desktop, so it's not in Finder anymore, but the screen on the T1 still say's it's connected - if it's not picking up on my Mac, it's safe for me to unplug it then?

I'll check over my ADE account and see if that's the problem.

Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately you have to do it every time. That's exactly right: as long as the Finder no longer shows the little disk drive icon, it's safe to unplug the USB.

If the Finder ever refuses to eject any USB drive icon and force-quitting the Finder leads to an error which refuses to relaunch the Finder, take that as a sign to backup all your data immediately if you can (boot from external drive if you need to) and run Disk Utility on your boot partition at once.

Okay brilliant. Thanks a lot for your help.

I've worked out that ejecting through Sony's Reader software, it ejects both SETTING and READER, whereas ejecting only from Calibre ejects READER, so I have to manually eject SETTING... which I think is a fair compromise considering I don't have to organise my books through Reader.

So, how do I go about fixing the Reader store? My device say's it's registered for Adobe Digital Editions... so I'm at a loss.

You should not have to log in each time. I tried duplicating what happens to you. So I'm taking a stab at it.

You have to click on settings & then turn on your wireless. Yeah I know you know this ;o) BUT if you don't wait for the wireless to completely connect before going to the reader store it will prompt you to log in. If this happens, do you see the sign up button below? Next to it should be a skip button. Click on that & it will take you to the reader store anyway.

If you wait for the connection to complete entirely you should not have any trouble connecting to the store. It does take a a few seconds for it to complete. Check the little icon up near the battery icon. It should be fully shown before the connection is complete. Then tap on the reader store button.

I hope I'm being clear. If you are still having problems, I sure don't know what else to tell you. I hope someone will be able to.

Yeah, even when my connection is definitely... er... connected, it still makes me login each time.

I emailed Sony and received this

"Thank you for your replay

I understand that you are facing a Issue during log in to your Sony Reader Store Account through Sony E-Reader ( PRS-T1 )

Sadly, Remembering User name and Password of the Account holder in your Device ( PRS – T1 ) is not available, unlike the application with “ Remember me “ Check box.

Regarding the uninstall of the application to resolve the issue, please perform the following steps :

– Open the Reader Application Installer.

– If the Application is already installed the installer will ask you to choose one of three options ( Repair – Modify – Remove ).

– Choose the Remove selection and it should uninstall the application.

– Install the Application one more time and it suppose to work normally.

I hope that this information has been helpful. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best Regards,

Moustafa Awad

Sony Reader Store"

So, according to him, the T1 isn't enabled to login automatically, I have to type in my email and password each time to get to the store? If so, why does my device say "Device Registration Now", along with it saying "Processing" each time I login?

He also told me how to uninstall a program from Windows. I know how to do this. I switched over to Mac, but have never had a problem where an application I removed, once reinstalled retained the login information I had inputted earlier.

I guess it is time to return your T1. Unless someone else has an idea what is going on. It should not perform that way. And mine doesn't.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll have to, unless a fix can be found.

I did upgrade the firmware to the latest version. If am able to get a new T1, do I really need to upgrade or can I stick with the 1.0.02 version, I think it was.

??? Why would you suggest returning the device when there's nothing wrong with it? The device is fine.

Marty, did you create an account on the Sony store? Not your Adobe ID but the Sony Reader store?

What country are you in? I believe I've read that some outside the US & Canada have to set their country to US, register for the account & then change it back to wherever you are & it *should* be good to go.

Sometimes my reader keeps me signed in for the Reader Store & sometimes it doesn't. I like it better that it doesn't keep it logged in so no one playing with my reader can accidentally buy books I don't want.

You're not logging in. It sounds to me like the device still isn't registered. You have to do that first. Create an account at the Sony store. From there you register the device.

Logging in is what you do AFTER you've registered the device. You're logging into your Sony Reader Store account.

Does that make sense? I hope so because I really don't think you need to return the thing. There's nothing wrong with it.

Just out of curiousity have you been able to buy a book or even download a free book from the Sony store at all? If not, what happens when you try? I'm betting it's what I said above - you have to create an account at the Sony Reader Store, then register the device.

Yes the User Guide is very much valid & important to read. It tells you how to use the device itself. You do need to know that. Calibre is the software you use to manage the books on your device. You still need to know how to actually use the device itself right?

Hey, Shopaholic,

Yeah, I created an account in the Sony Reader store, through the Reader application. I set up that, then it asked about ADE, to which I logged in with my ADE info. I then added my billing information, and then proceeded to login in on the device, and I keep getting that logging in device registration thing now.

Still utterly lost on what am doing wrong to be honest.

So, the T1 shows up on Reader on my computer as being linked to the account, surely that's registered then?

Yeah, I've been able to get a free book fine. Just a bit concerned cuz my account info is on Reader now, and am unable to take it off, as far as I can tell. I also tried making another account set to the US, and when I tried to login it wouldn't allow me.

Lol, I was planning on reading through the user guide when my T1 was set up. Since I'm familiar with Android I was able to pick up using the Reader okay, it's just the store that's being funny.

Thanks.

Did you Authorize the reader after opening a Sony Reader store account? With regards to logging out of the Sony program on your computer, you cannot. Once you start the program it automatically logs you in. Don't know why but you can't. That's the way they made it. Remember that registering for an account & authorizing are two different actions.

I agree with ATDrake in that I don't think your Adobe & Sony Reader store accounts are properly connected and that's the issue. It's most certainly not the device. It's user error here. We just have to figure out where.

Creating two accounts at the Reader store wasn't a good thing. Could you possibly have two Adobe accounts and maybe that's confusing things?

On the device go to Settings, Device Information. Does it say Authorized for Adobe DRM?

On your computer open the Reader for PC or Mac (sorry don't have a Mac so hopefully it's the same). Go to the Store, then My Account what does it say under My Devices, Devices? Does it list the reader there? When I had both my 350 & the T1 I renamed them Pink 350 & Black T1 so I'd know which was which because I think it just called it some generic name. I can't remember exactly.

Have you gone through the FAQ's in the Sony Help section? I opened the Reader for PC software on my computer & clicked on Help. It took me to this page which I think would be useful for you to go through.

http://ebooks.custhelp.com/

Look at the questions pertaining to creating an account, registering the device, Adobe ID, authorizing, deauthorizing & things like that.

**edit**
Please note that some of the terminology is for the previous Sony Reader software, Reader Library. Terminology for the Reader for PC/Mac will be similar but not exact.
