Kindles can download directly of Amazon when you need to get a DRM encumbered book from them, thus bypassing the need to use a PC (Win, Mac, Linux, ...).

Also, once you have a registered Kindle device, you can purchase a book using your PC's browser and have it download to the PC. If the book is DRM encumbered it will be configured for the specific device you specify at purchase time. This is an option not visible on their site until you have registered a device, not app, to your account. The downloaded ebook can then be copied to the device over USB on any OS that supports the MASS Storage standard.

It could also be a reference to the 'sometimes' poor quality of writing that is available to ereaders. lol.

And if you have the "Send to Kindle"app you can send other books and documents to your "Personal Documents" folder in your Kindle Archive and then later download them to your Kindle via the Kindle Wi Fi or 3G connection you have on your Kindle device. So you could have a book (in Kindle format) that you purchased at say Smashwords and have added to your Kindle Archive or even a book found here at MR that you have added to it and download it from your Kindle Archive to your Kindle reader at a later time. Meanwhile it's stored for you for easy retrieval later.

Yes, its a handy app, but currently its Windows only. Users of other OSs (Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, ...) have to resort to conventional email to accomplish this. The OP uses Linux.

No, Amazon released the Mac version of Send to Kindle a few weeks ago. Won't help the OP, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Clearly, English isn't the native language of the poster. There are many people here - myself included - that have English as second or third language.
This is one of THE best places to ask about readers, so, please, let's try to help regardless of the level of knowledge of English.

Only the first(*) Sony - the PRS-500 model had problem. All the newer Sony devices work perfectly as "USB disk". Sony devices also have an SD card slot.

(*) - there was Sony Librie, before that, sold only in Japan and that one was totally catastrophic - there was NO WAY for you to load a book, except books officially purchased from Sony. No wonder it was a failure.

You're perfectly right. And most times this forum is very kind to us non-native speakers. But one thing that makes understanding posts here difficult - especially for us - is the overuse of abbreviations. So I found it okay to give a little hint in this direction.

Kobo also works fine by USB.

It's just that those two have recommended software to manage the books, which is important if you buy from those stores.; some people skip that entirely and use either Calibre or just drag-and-drop into the ereader's drive(s).

(I use a Sony PRS-505 and no Sony software, and don't deal with DRM at all.)

And the PRS-500 does have opensource drivers. I've seen them work fine with Linux for a while. Also, it is only the ones with the older firmware that require the driver. If it has been updated to support ePub, then it will act as a mass storage device, just like all the newer Sony Readers.

Kindle and Nook also have desk top apps for reading. I seldom use them though: I prefer the dedicated readers I own.

that post was in reference to desktop library applications for managing your ebook collection and synching it etc from computer to device. it was not about alternate off device reading applications
