I was using 7 monitors when I had linux mint in the VM and Win7 64-bit underneath. When I reversed it and put linux in control of the hardware, it was hard enough getting nVidia and Radeon cards to work so I could even get 4 of them working, and I needed one of my "video card" slots for my revodrive ssd. Putting linux in control was a mixed blessing...

Hmm...
So the only problem was that the auto-mounting and starting (or offering to start) of Banshee mis-lead the O.P. into thinking the Kindle wasn't recognized as a file system. And... My comment that the *nix system might offer to open a file browser was overly specific. @orbiting: The same thing is "under the hood" of your Linux/Mint as "under the hood" of your Linux/Kindles. A major difference (other than GUI) is your Linux/Mint has the man(ual) command and documentation pages installed. Just remember, on any *nix system man(ual) is your friend. man mount man umount . . . . |

http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/P/PEBKAC.html is far too strong a term. Everybody has to start somewhere. The O.P. did quite well, considering only having had a few weeks of *nix experience. At least, he didn't ask us how to push the reset button ![]() |

Good job orbiting! (No harm intended). ![]() Pejorative terms are often used in a humorous manner between myself and my peers, and we all know that no harm is intended, but I need to be careful in a mutli-cultural public forum like this though. ![]() Last edited by geekmaster; 05-21-2012 at 08:31 PM. |

Waaait! LOL, remember my first post, it did have a problem, the hard disk kept erasing itself and the stuff I transferred via USB didn't show up. I'm pretty computer illiterate but I *can* tell when a drive is behaving in a weird way - keep poor Banshee out of it
![]() Somewhere along the way I lost "text-to-speech", but whatever, it works otherwise. Thanks guys =) |

I think instead it was a problem with the display and access of the hard disk contents which is a common result of the Linux VFS system running a VFAT storage medium. The key to my conclusion is that the stuff you transferred via USB "didn't show up". If you hadn't formatted the drive in the process of searching for the cause, we could learn what was happening from the "hidden" sectors of the VFAT partition. But that information was wiped out by the re-format, so all any of us can do is speculate at this point. It is just good to hear that it is working now. Jumping into a Linux VFS (virtual file system) problem is not the recommended way to start learning Linux. ![]() |

Kindle customer service
@GM and others - -
Do we want to write up a newbie level "HowTo" allow ssh access from the network? Technically easy to do, but who wants to log into somebody's Kindle 7 time zones away to fix a non-standard problem? Hmm... Maybe via a subscription web-site. Redhat is getting $100/million per month with service contracts, Hey GM, you need some extra pocket change? ![]() |

![]() I really do appreciate your help - thank you very much ![]() As for your suggestion re: newbies, it seems to me that even a hint of a faint and vague understanding of what one is doing is necessary, even if I personally happened on the "solution" by chance. I followed a cookbook approach first, it didn't work, and that's how I wound up reading all those threads and stickies, and eventually signing up. I can get feeling a bit irritated too. Your "customer service" idea isn't half bad ![]() ![]() |

Perhaps more practical, a "Kindle Rescue" LiveCD (or LiveUSB) install. Simple, small, people here would know what the people out there where looking at (and what, if any, automation was present screwing up the "expected results"). |

quick update
Hi everyone, I'm just popping by to say
![]() A couple of days ago, Windows surprised me by spontaneously detecting errors in the Kindle drive. This was verified by Acronis True Image. I ran TI and allowed it to correct these mysterious errors; after a lot of drama, it wound up dumping 490 faulty files into a new folder that it created called "Lost", which I accessed via Mint. I deleted it and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Is this weird? I just want to *read* for (insert your favorite curseword)'s sake. Uhmm.... any ideas on how I can get the text-to-speech and audibles back? Anyway, thanks again. And, Knc, you rock. I can't understand like three quarters of the stuff you've said, but still ![]() ![]() ![]() |
