A pal of mine has a pocket specially made for his kind put in his main jacket that holds just the kindle and nothing else. He did that because he has lost several kindles. Another pal of mine puts hers in a particularly well padded case and puts it in her purse. Get in the habit of checking on the kindle each any every time you leave a room and/or store so that you don't lose it once again.
I think your friends are the exception rather than the rule. Most people care about their gadgets & don't leave them behind like used tissues. Sure the odd time you can put your wallet/purse/phone/reader down and forget to pick it up, but constantly, no. That's just carelessness.

important point! this is one of the devices I'm considering to get (the others being the nook and the sony - off-the-beaten-path they call me).

I would say that if Amazon starts releasing books tha my kindle can't read (or can't read in the "enhanced" format), it would be quite the dealbreaker for me.

So do we know whether this is true or likely?

We don't know. I would guess that they will sell books and send the right book to the device. There are many K1-3 out there and Amazon would be foolish to piss off all those customers.

We don't about the K3/KK and KF8. But from what we've read, Amazon has said KF8 will be supported on current generation Kindles and there's a good chance that the K3/KK being the previous generation isn't going to get KF8. That said, if the K3/KK does not get KF8 it will still be able to handle Mobi. Amazon will still support it with Mobi. But it will not get the advanced formatting features of KF8.

Right now, the only eink Kindle that supports KF8 is the Touch. To be honest, if you do go for a Kindle, get the Touch. You'll love the touch screen (IMHO).

Glad you added the IMHO proviso there.

There are many of us (myself included) who don't enjoy the touch screen at all on our e-readers.

Whatever Amazon chooses to do with its future product range, I hope there will be a continuing role for page-turning buttons.

I've found that most people who do not like a touch screen have not actually tried IR touch on an eink screen. They base their dislike on having used an LCD touch that gets fingerprints all over. eink touch is not at all like LCD touch as far as fingerprints go. You don't really see fingerprints on the eink screen. Plus when you do want to clean the screen, it cleans a lot easier then LCD.

I love my IPad, especially now that I have a stylus. I would get a touch screen reader now but I would like the option of buttons.

May be true, but I'm guessing your statement "they base their dislike" is your own speculation, not the result of an actual survey. Some people I know have other reasons for liking keyboards. Personally I hardly ever use mine but I have friends who are avid players of Kindle games and puzzles that require lots of typing, like Scrabble and NYT Crosswords. A physical keyboard makes this easier than having to bring up the on-screen version.

I would have thought that. Then I got an IPad. (shrugs)

I love my kindles with keyboards but have found a touch screen pretty easy to adapt to. I have a feeling that will be the case for many people.

I still would like the option of buttons.

Having a K3 and K4NT myself, plus having played with a relative's K4T, I'll choose the button control every time. Nothing to do with fingerprints. I also own an iPhone 4, the ultimate touch-screen device, and love it.

For the kindles the number after the K is the firmware major version number. They are the K4(mini) or the K5(touch). The "K4NT" term is a misnomer from the early days when the K4 and K5 came out at almost the same time. The "touch" has always had firmware version 5.x.x.

The generic names for kindles here is DX/DXG/K3/K4/K5. There is and never was a K4(touch).

Many a person, myself included, has mentioned not liking fingerprints on the screen. It has been a popular sentiment in topics on this board and others. So not a survey but a common statement over many years. Letting people know that the screens are different and that most touch ereaders do not have the fingerprint problem is legit.

Who wants to see fingerprint smudges while looking at their reflection on a shiny screen?

Almost ALL of my video display devices have a matte (non-reflective) screen, just like the kindles. If you want to see your reflection, you can buy a mirror at the dollar store.

A nice side-effect of no visible reflection is no visible fingerprints.
