I'd vote for the Kindle Fire. I have a Kindle 3 Keyboard and a Fire and the Fire is far better since it can run Android Apps as well as read eBooks. I'm also in advanced age.

The Fire also is best for indoors use with variable lighting. The Kindle 3 Keyboard needs bright light.

Target is having sales where you can save $30 on a cover or light for a Kindle right now. I saw this for the NT and Touch models.

As I get older I need more light to read with. It makes focusing easier. So you may want to check out the supposedly forthcoming glowlight kindle.

Well I finally got my mom a Kindle today. It's one of the Kindle Special Offers models (non-touch). I picked it up at Wal-Mart this morning along with the one year replacement/service option. I figured if she dropped it and it broke at least that way we'd have a good chance of getting it replaced easily. Not that she is likely to drop it (at least I hope not) but better safe than sorry.

Wouldn't ordering straight from Amazon negated the extra expense of the warranty from Walmart?

Unless the Walmart version had some sale going on or something ....

Maybe, but she usually gets to the mail before I do (and I wanted it to be a surprise) and this way I didn't have to wait for it to arrive either.

Good choice! I find the K4NT easy and intuitive to operate and nice and light to hold and easy to read. No fancy stuff but I don't take a lot of notes or anything like that. Typing on it is the only annoying thing.

And after experimenting with a twitchy touch-screen on a Blackberry Torch 9810 (and promptly going back to MobiPocket Reader for Blackberry instead of Kindle for Blackberry for reading my collection (3,500+) of DRM-free mobi formatted books I've been making for the last 13 years), you might also consider adding a stylus if there's any issue with being able to accurately isolate a single point with her fingertip. I got a Nataal electro-capacitive stylus from Amazon and it made life *much* simpler, and I have steady hands and small finger tips. YMMV
