30+ upgrades of Calibre (Linux) with narry a bump.

Some of those bumps you are seeing are other than Vanilla (GUI) installs.
Lets face it. You install Windows. Period.

Linux has hundreds of variants . Gnome and KDE are just a couple of the common desktops . The fact that Calibre does work on so many is

I've been using Linux since sometime in 1992 (0.12). The issues I've had to deal with over the years have been nothing compared to some of the Windows issues I've dealt with during the same time frame.

And yes, this should probably be over in Politics.

And you were able to solve the Linux issues yourself. Windows issues needed uncle Bill to provide the fix.

Probably should be in politics.

OS Wars probably shouldn't be in the main forums.

Yes, I know we aren't having an OS war, but these things tend to deteriorate quickly.

If you're using Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit) and want to try the manual install, then you need to download and use the calibre-X.X.XX-i686.tar.bz2 package and not the calibre-X.X.XX-x86_64.tar.bz2 package (which is only for 64-bit OSs).
@anishtain4 you can download the 32 bit version here.

Apologies to all, but I'm about to go off topic.

Simply put this statement is off topic and has successfully hijacked a thread and sent it spiraling off topic. Essentially this statement adds nothing constructive to this thread and is nothing more than troll bait.

Well it has nothing to do with calibre either. Take it to another forum. As jgaiser stated this is not the place for OS wars.

I think that it is you.

I have been running on Linux at home for quite some time now and I have less problems than some other people using other operating systems. (*)
Before that I was using FreeBSD for several years.
