And to think they could produce non ladder-able tights for women. And an unbreakable car which would need no spare parts and last 20 years. But why. What of industry, workplaces and economy and money making world go round. Brought to you by your friendly Eeyore.

I want one that doesn't need a battery at all, but instead runs off body heat in your hands.

I had a calculator once that had a solar cell that charged a rechargeable battery. Even a room light would make it charge so if it got a little dark (of course not so dark you couldn't see it) or it was turned from the light, it would still work.
Has any eReader ever had a Solar Cell? Is that practical? I mean would a reasonably sized (and priced) solar cell panel run an eReader? |

I am no expert but there are in my opinion only two places that you could put solar panels. On top and bottom of the bezel's front side, you need the sides to hold on. Or the back side. Now the backside isn't going to be facing the sun a whole lot, and the room on the bezel's front side probably doesn't have enough room.
I would certainly welcome it, in a sense it would become the first real perpetum mobile. |

I've seen a solar charger cover somewhere but I figured it wouldn't work especially well for my use.

Similar in function I guess is the pendulum (mechanical) automatic watches like Seiko has. They store enough energy for days of no movement. |

Of course, this one is DIY, but if you have any hardware geek friends, you can have one! ![]() Also, you can buy USB solar chargers from Chinese (or Hong Kong) ebay stores for about $3USD (including shipping). This one is rated at 5.1v 0.4w (about the same as charging from a host PC), but for a little more money, you can get one with more charging (or operating) current: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-Solar-Ba...item27c87453f8 Last edited by geekmaster; 06-29-2012 at 07:15 AM. |

Without doing any calculations...I strongly suspect that a Kindle would need a much larger panel, sunlight (rather than indoor lighting) and a good deal longer charge time. You'll probably never save enough to get the cost back vs. plugging it into an outlet. And we haven't considered the energy and waste produced in the manufacture of the solar cells. Geez! I'm even boring myself. |

I charge my T1/350/650 on the go with a PowerMonkey, charged from the mains, (3-ish hrs from zero) which holds it for around 6-8 months, and will still charge the readers fully then.
However, you can get a solar panel for it instead, thereby enabling you to charge the reader by solar energy....with an extra step in t' middle. But it amounts to the same thing, dunnit ........ ![]() I know there's another charger like the Monkey, the name of which I can't recall at the moment, but it isn't as well designed - but I think the panel they sell is a bit quicker (and bigger) than Monkey's own. Presuming it fits, which it must with all the tips they include with everything ............. ![]() Incidentally, the solar-powered calculator's been with us for many many years - I think the first one I had was a dual power source one around 20 years ago. |

Actually, my mobile phone provider in Japan was selling a solar powered ebook reader, maybe the same as below. I forget. Saw it last time a month ago or so....but the reader is too bulky and big for my taste...
