Even if I didn't already own one, chances are I still wouldn't do it. The "free" one would end up costing me more money than buying it outright.

If the program would require that you buy a certain number of books per year to get a free Kindle, then no. I get most of my ebooks for free or I borrow from the library.

I think that's true of most "free" items, but that doesn't seem to stop a lot of people from taking the bait.

I could work out like this:

Books I'd really like to get this year but can't justify the expense: $250

Books I'm perfectly satisfied with available for free or low cost: $10

A Kindle: $79

If I happen to want a Kindle (either a first reader that I was going to buy anyway, or just interested in getting another), and Amazon offered an Audible-like deal such as:

"Free" Kindle, get 2 ebooks of your choice per month for $9.99, one year commitment.

That makes the cost of "Books I really want" plus "The Kindle I want" total only around $120.

That could be attractive, even if I wasn't going to spend the $250.

And, of course, even if you didn't want the Kindle you could sell it and probably get at least $50 for it.
