3mm? Must be a marketing ploy.

I don't need a chip to buy a book off of the internet and that is where I buy my books. So I guess this is cool if you shop a lot and you carry your e-reader with you as opposed to you shop a lot and you carry your phone with you?

I think I remain clueless because I fail to see this as a big deal but I hate shopping and rarely buy things in smaller numbers (like soft drinks and chips and the like). So it is probably that I am in the minority.

It's easy to see a future where shoppers browse B&N's physical stores and when they see a book they like, they simply place their Nook on the cover of that book and it's automatically bought and downloaded onto the Nook.

Or maybe an interface would pop up on the Nook, where they can click to read reviews, click to see other works by the same author, click to see "similar titles" recommendations, and of course click to buy.
my thoughts exactly and I hope theirs as well.

this could actually get physical book stores back in to smaller spaces in malls. Part of the issue with physical stores is of course size as size = rent. with this they shoudl be able to "right size" some stores to fit in smaller "news stand" type spaces where they have fewer physical copies but still have them for folks who want them and it allows for browsing with your ereader. could even lead to B&N branded stores within a store so that your local grocer's magazine/book section becomes a branded B&N space.

It's extremely useful for things like paying on public transport, at car parks, etc. Enormously faster than having to put your card in a machine and enter a PIN.

If a phone doesn't require a PIN, then why should a card?

We may be talking at cross-purposes, TM. I was making a comparison to the normal method of paying for something with a credit card - putting the card into a machine and entering your PIN. That's what NFC replaces for small purchases - you just tap your card against the reader instead. Much, much faster.

Actually, now I come to think of it, CAN you pay for things in automated machines with credit cards in the US? Do you have "chip and PIN" credit cards yet, or do you still have to use a signature?

I don't have chips in either of my two credit cards. All I have to do is swipe the card through a reader (card has a magnetic strip). Then depending on the amount of purchase, I may or may not have to sign a digital screen.

As HarryT pointed out, one of the most popular uses for NFC cards is for transportation. Japan has SUICA/PASMO, London has Oyster cards and in Sweden we have Jojo (for some reason they require inane names) cards, you can enter a period or prepaid amount, if prepaid the entry point is recorded when you pass the stalls and then when you exit the required amount is deducted. In congested cities it saves a lot of time getting on and off. Once you have it in your CC you won't need the transport specific cards. You can pretty much program them for anything and everything.

I don't use a pin for purchase under $25 anywhere in the US. I think I have a card with this but for the most part I. Slide my card and sign. The only timeIcan think of that I spend less than $25 is when I go out for lunch at work.

I sure hope you remember to turn your NFC 'off' before boarding an airplane! Otherwise, that plane could crash! /sarcasm

No, I think you perhaps misunderstand the way it works. It's a completely "passive" system until it comes into close proximity to the reader. The reader is the power source; the NFC chip is totally inert until it's activated by the reader.

It's been available in Canada for a while as well. Another big advantage is that the card does not leave your hand, so no chance for somebody to sneakily swipe it to later make a duplicate.
