You have an unencrypted file (which may or may not still have other info embedded inside). Not-cracking means that they don't do the equivalent of random lock-picking of the front door, but instead borrow the key that was hidden inside one of those fake stone turtle ornaments in the garden.

Probably not. But I have a lot of books bought elsewhere, and converted to mobi. While I will put them on my kindle, I hesitate to use the Amazon cloud to store them. Some enterprising person may get nosy.

Meh, I just used the new Send to Kindle for Mac program to put all the books I bought recently at Kobo in the Amazon cloud. I've been emailing my Poisoned Pen Press and Phoenix Pick and Google and assorted other non-Amazon purchases there since day one.

On my Kindle DX and in Kindle for Android I keep the books with DRM (the ones that I bought from Amazon, though I also have plenty of converted epubs). I just strip them so I can make backups.

I do use the email to Kindle program, and a copy of the book is backed up on the Amazon servers. But I don't keep all that many books on my kindle, and right now I am reading books I bought at Amazon, anyway. But the DRM is gone.

I wouldn't worry about it. Amazon isn't going to go through your Cloud and look at the books. I have all my books I plan to read this year on the cloud. Amazon knows that would be bad business if they did. They are not going to shoot themselves in the foot.

If anyone remembers the late 90s/early 2000s and what happened with DRMed Walmart and MSN Music files, you'll realize, that to properly future proof yourself, you should always maintain proof of purchase and decrypt your content.

Amazon > Apprentice Alf > Calibre > Back-up > Kindle. Even with the freebies from Amazon (so I can read them even if I decide to change to a Sony or Kobo in future) and it's the disinfected file that goes on my Kindle.
It's funny how I've read a few mentions of people in the book industry saying they can look at the mistakes that were made in the music industry and learn from them, but yet they persist in going with DRM? Library books yes that makes sense, but the music industry shows it doesn't really work and isn't needed, so why are they going down the same route? |

Yes. The third party extension from my friend Alf does the actual DRM removal, and it happens entirely outside of Calibre. But it's the Add Book process in Calibre that kicks off the cleaning of the file.

One more small correction: There is no need to convert to MOBI if you bought it from Kobo or B&N or whomever. Calibre can be setup so that simply sending an ePub document to your Kindle gets that file converted on the way there.

I prefer to control that process, and do the conversion myself. But yes, I knew it could be automated, just not something I've bothered to do, since I'm already in there, mucking around with covers and/or metadata.
