When will we see a $49.99 Kindle? - Page 2

I'm not sure when, but it is inevitable. Prices keep decreasing. My first CD player cost $250. Now, I can get one that is much better for $10. We don't need a lot of added features to an e-reader, so there won't be an endless adding of features that will keep the price high. I don't think that Web Browser and the MP3 player add much expense, if any.

I got a free iPod some years ago for opening an investment account.

Already there. People have been mentioning that they were offered free kindles for opening credit cards and checking accounts last year.

I'm with the Sockpuppet on this one, they'll be ubiquitous in the not too distant future. Let's face it the cool factor is in descendancy. Once the $49.99 is released it will take less than 12 months before the $24.95 comes to market.

The topic can go either way - permanent price or sale price. The OP doesn't say for sure; it just implies a permanent drop. Anyway, it's just a bit of minutia that shouldn't detract form our desire for a quality ereader at a very affordable price point of $49. I may even talk myself into one of these.

I think probably never, except when something else is really being sold ("Buy a new car, get a free Kindle plus $25 gift Amazon gift card!").

I've just decided against it. Having the lightest possible background/best contrast is important to me (probably inordinately so). It appears we have a higher probability of getting an inferior screen in the Kindle NT:

Given that E-Ink just announced their first loss in 10 quarters and a 54% drop in revenue I'd say Amazon doesn't have a lot of room to grind them lower on the screen price.

It is also worth noting the following “Our major customer was too optimistic about its sales in the fourth quarter of last year and ordered too much from us,”. Sounds like demand is off, so economies of scale won't continue to drive down pricing. I wouldn't count on seeing significant price changes in the near term, unless Amazon decides to make a significant loss on each unit in order to stimulate demand.
