You so do not hate saying that Jon. (winks)
The e-books have been available at all the stores for the last few years. EPub readers have had time to buy them. Penguin decided to not renew the contract, Amazon gave them a good deal. (shrugs) Amazon does not have to make them exclusive. It will be interesting the see what happens. |

Penguin never had the rights for the ebooks, Ian Fleming Publications produced ebooks for both the US and UK. Btw, Random House's Vintage Books imprint purchased the rights for the books and ebooks outside the US and Canada.

I saw one one or two of the ebooks pop up on some of the Amazon sales the last six months (I believe in one of those "select 1 of 50 books of a certain genre for $1" deals, otherwise it may have been one of those monthly "100 books for $2.99 or less" sales), so that explains that. Non-agency.

can't blame amazon for snapping up a good deal, its not their fault nobody else wanted them. i guess the other pubs were too busy signing snooki to another book deal to worry about a legacy i.p. like james bond.

The DOJ is doing something about the collusion that led to Agency Pricing. Random House can continue using the same Agency Pricing structure and MFN status for Apple if it wants as it was not charged.

Really, what large group are you talking about? Everybody owning a computer can read them. Everybody having a smart phone can read them. Everybody that can buy a cheap Kindle can read them.

All the books are around USD 9.-, lol. Thanks, but no thanks. I would get a few of them for $5-6.

Well why not? Don't you have a smartphone or computer? Get the kindle app and read to your heart's content. No reason you have to give up your Nook or whatever. Just buy from more than one retailer. Heck the lowest priced ereader from Amazon isn't that much. Have 2 ereaders or 3 if you want one registered in England to get ebooks not available in the US.

Here's a question I'd love to ask J.B.: If the point of creating the Kindle was to sell content, and you're so enamored of content sales that you're offering the Kindle Fire at a loss in order to increase content demand, then what's stopping you from selling additional content to epub-only readers, since you don't even have to take a loss on hardware to make that money?
(For me, James Bond novels conjure the image of unshaven people in hospital gowns reading mass-market paperbacks on institutional sofas while mumbling mathematical formulas to themselves, but for the rest of you, enjoy.) |

Another reason to hold onto my vintage 60s paperbacks of these, including Thrilling Cities.

It will be interesting to see how Amazon prices the Bond books. They are 50 years old and all of the editorial costs have already been absorbed and paid for. Amazon's costs should be minimal, especially as it claims not to have the legacy overhead of a traditional publisher. Consequently, I would think that a fair price for the ebooks would be $2.99. Will Amazon fans complain if the price is higher? |

Personally I don't complain about backlist fiction unless it is over $7. I might or might not buy it at that price depending on my desire to read it and the size of my TBR list, but anything that price or lower seems fine. Maybe not reprints of old silhouttes or harlequins though, those are closer to novelettes than true novels, so I probably wouldn't pay over $4 for one of those.
