I'm looking forward to JKR's new book. HP is not distributed by Bloomsbury in Canada any more, but by Penguin, and of course in the U.S. HP is published by Scholastic. Perhaps JKR wanted to have the same publisher publish her new book in North America and in Europe this time around? There really could have been many, many factors that influenced her decision.

In fact, they're often outright screw jobs. Once you've got one (or three) books of a series with one publisher, it's generally a bad idea to switch. And there may have been a right of first refusal on any new books in the series for said publisher.

In any event, it's not at all uncommon, especially for a writer looking to do "something different" than what they're known for. Lois McMaster Bujold is a loyal Baen author, but when she wanted to do some fantasy (rather than science fiction) she went to a different publisher "just because." And when she went back to science fiction, she went back to Baen.
If you're talking about the Chalion series and IIRC, Bujold "auctioned" the idea and Eos offered the deal that she liked the best. Rowling could have done the same thing.

[QUOTE=fjtorre................... she's generally raked in the cash without pandering or grubbing. Or leaving (visible) bodies in her wake.
Nicely done, really...........[/QUOTE]

Ah, in that case my apol's, and I agree with all you said, particularly the above.

And I agree, I don't think she does care...... it's a challenging hobby now, as it were, and good luck to her for it.
She's probably writing for herself now.

Her recent "hunt the ancestor" project she embarked on was fascinating, and showed a side of her rarely seen by the public.
Her charity work, and philanthropy, show she's got things more important to her than writing a best seller - but if it came again, there you go.
