You have to unlock the bootloader so you can install custom ROMs. Unlocking the bootloader is usually a pre-requirement to rooting, but some root exploits work in a different way.

Once you unlock the bootloader you can install ClockworkMod and you'll be in business.

Depends on your phone but most of the time you have to get a rooted kernel to flash a custom recovery. Follow the link to find how to go about it for your phone

I'll have to get back to this tomorrow I think, or later today rather. The clock reads 05:08 now, which feels suspiciously like bed time.

Time to throw in the towel I think. I've scoured the xda-dev forums, read guides, followed instructions and attempted to root using SuperOneClick, DoomLord v4 and Flashtool, all of which should handle Android 2.3.4 on Xperia Arc, but entirely without success.

Bugger, bugger, bugger.
