It leads into a shag in the toilets, so I would say it was necessary. So it's more a case of how detailed it is.

As for level of detail, my personal take is "same as with your sex scenes". If they are vague, keep the violence vague. If they're gratuitous, go into detail about broken noses, bruises, and blood.
