If I took my fixed up version of HP #1 and ran it through Kindlegen, would it look the same in KF8?

Maybe... but probably not exactly. Just because Kindlegen converts ePubs easily enough to KF8 doesn't mean it's a straight-up WYSIE(xactly)WYG conversion. You still have to have specific knowledge of what Kindlegen does with various code/css situations in order to create an epub that will convert to an "identical" KF8 ebook. It's still conversion going on... not magic.

Not sure what you mean by 'the same'. Every reading system has different behaviors, different typefaces etc.

That said, it is pretty easy to fix it so that the drop caps are lined up correctly (via media query added to hp.css), and that's really the only problem I've seen with the KF8 version. The mobi version has different problems but they are easy to fix also.

But this is not a very fancy ebook, typographically, so it will look as good on Kindle as on an ePub reading system, unless you want hyphenation for better justification (which I think would be a good option for Amazon to add).

BTW I sent feedback about the issues I saw to Pottermore, and they responded very quickly and 'escalated it to their technical department.' I do believe they might go off and fix it. I actually meant to get the more 'authentic' UK version, but in my haste clicked on US.

Quite possibly the UK version does not have the same issues that I saw. For example, there are several ways to create drop caps in InDesign and that could cause variation in the HTML code it generates for ePub export, with one being easier for kindlegen to convert accurately than another. And to be clear, I'm pretty sure they did nothing more than pass the ePub through kindlegen: no media queries or other fine tuning first.
